PRACE Award Winners Announced for ISC'09

PRACE, Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, awards a prize for an outstanding scientific paper submitted to ISC’09 by a European student or young scientist on petascaling. The PRACE Award will be presented for the second time at the ISC’09 in Hamburg, Germany.

The PRACE Award 2009 winners are J. C. MouriñoA. GómezJ. M. TaboadaL. LandesaJ. M. BértoloF. Obelleiro and J. L. Rodríguez from Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA), Universidad de Extremadura, Universidad de Vigo, Spain. Their work “High Scalability Multipole Method. Solving Half Billion of Unknowns” was declared as the winning paper among the excellent submissions.

The PRACE Award 2009 drew a record submission of 56 papers. The winner was selected by the ISC Award Committee, led by Michael Resch, Director of HLRS.

“The selection of the winning paper was difficult because a lot of very good papers were submitted”, says the leader of PRACE work package “Petaflop/s Systems for 2009/2010” François Robin (GENCI), member of the ISC Award Committee.

“Large electromagnetic simulations are of great interest for the design of complex industrial products that are more and more integrating electronic equipments. They are also very useful for understanding and reducing the impact of electromagnetic fields on human being.  The selected paper for the PRACE award  presents an outstanding work on the scalability of the FMM-FFT method (fast multiple method - fast fourier transform) and its application for solving a challenging problem with 0.5 billion of unknowns and opens the road towards even larger simulations. It will make possible to run simulations with a much higher resolution than before making possible to improve the accuracy of the simulations and to address new computational challenges in the field of very high frequencies for example for new car anti-collision systems”, Robin continues.

The prize will be presented at the opening session of ISC’09, Tuesday, June 23 in Hamburg, Germany. The much-anticipated TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in the world will be released at the same session in addition to two ISC Awards.

PRACE will have a booth at the ISC’09 exhibition and also host a networking session during ISC’09. The networking session will take place on Wednesday, June 24. More details will follow on the PRACE web site www.prace-project.eu.
