Conference offers special provision for delayed submissions from Japan

The SC11 technical program committee has extended by one week the deadlines for submitting technical papers, tutorials, panels and nominations for the ACM Gordon Bell Prize.  

The submission deadline for these components of the technical program is now April 15. The deadline for technical paper and ACM Gordon Bell Prize abstracts remains April 1. All submissions are now being accepted at https://submissions.supercomputing.org/.  In addition, SC11 will make special provisions for those in Japan who want to submit technical program content but need more time because of the recent natural disasters. Authors and presenters in Japan are urged to contact the technical program committee at techprogram@info.supercomputing.org before the submission deadline to work out a modified submission schedule.

SC11, the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis, will take place Nov. 12 – 18, 2011, and is expected to bring as many as 11,000 attendees from academia, industry and government to the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. 

“The SC conference series provides a rigorously reviewed technical program that is well known for its quality and breadth,” said Jim Rogers, SC11 Technical Program executive director and director of operations at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s National Center for Computational Sciences. “We are glad to be able to offer our community an extra week to prepare and submit their program content, and we look forward to an excellent technical program. We also recognize that many of our colleagues in Japan have much more important matters to deal with at this time. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them and we will work with them on modified submission schedules that meet our internal deadlines.”

SC technical papers provide a platform for presenting the most timely and highest quality work to the high performance computing, networking, storage and data analysis community. The technical papers committee reviews all submissions based on originality, technical soundness, timeliness, and impact and anticipates an acceptance rate of 20 – 25 percent.  Papers that address the conference thrust area of data-intensive science or the conference focus of sustained performance are especially encouraged. The ACM Gordon Bell Prize seeks to track the progress of parallel computing and reward innovation in applying high performance computing to scientific problems by recognizing outstanding achievement in high performance computing. Administered by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), financial support for the annual $10,000 award is provided by Gordon Bell, a pioneer in high performance and parallel computing. SC tutorials will be presented as half-day (three-hour) or full-day (six-hour) sessions on Sunday, Nov. 13, Monday, Nov. 14, and Friday, Nov. 18. This year’s conference encourages tutorials that focus on data-intensive science and sustained performance as well as those that support the goals of the conference’s Broader Engagement Program, which works to increase conference participation by groups who have been traditionally underrepresented in HPC. SC panels are 1.5-hour sessions involving three to five speakers and offering a lively, thought-provoking discussion on emerging technologies or different approaches to problem solving. The conference encourages panel submissions related to data intensive science, sustained performance and state of the practice.
