LSI Logic Supplies PCI-X I/O Chips for New Compaq ProLiant Servers

MILPITAS, CA -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) is supplying high performance PCI-X I/O chips to Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) for its market-leading ProLiant(TM) DL760 and ProLiant ML750 servers. This is the first PCI-X controller ASIC to be used in high-volume servers, providing enterprise customers with ultra high performance and scalability for the most demanding applications. The I/O chip functions as a host-to-PCI-X bridge, supporting multiple PCI-X and PCI cards in the Compaq ProLiant servers. The PCI-X technology doubles the throughput of the PCI bus, significantly increasing the bandwidth available for many high-performance applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, Ultra320 SCSI and cluster interconnects. "As a pioneer in PCI and PCI-X technology, Compaq is committed to providing innovative products integrated into solutions that enable customers to meet the demands of the Internet economy, such as bandwidth and throughput," said Ken Jansen, director of Compaq's Advanced Technology Development team. "The integration of Compaq's industry-defining technology with LSI Logic's strong ASIC and I/O subsystem into market-leading Compaq ProLiant servers will enable increased bandwidth management and deliver higher performance to Compaq customers' business computing platforms." "LSI Logic's goal is to continue to engage with market leaders like Compaq to provide emerging I/O solutions that enable greater server bandwidth," said Ron Kroesen, vice president of LSI Logic's Internet Computing Division. "The PCI-X controller allows Compaq to support high-speed, 64-bit bus architecture for faster server and storage applications." LSI Logic has worked with Compaq on PCI-X development since early in the specification phase and has developed a validation vehicle to simplify and accelerate broader deployment of PCI-X among system and adapter manufacturers. As a member of Compaq's PCI-X Golden-Master Program, LSI Logic obtained early access to the benefits of Compaq's PCI-X core development for its PCI-X to dual channel Ultra320 SCSI controller, which improves CPU utilization, I/O efficiency, and data integrity and recovery. The LSI53C1030 SCSI controller is the industry's first successful validation of Ultra320 SCSI performance, interoperability and packetized protocol. Built on LSI Logic's powerful Fusion-MPT(TM) architecture, the company announced commercial availability of the silicon and a worldwide sampling and demo program at the Computex tradeshow in Taipei, Taiwan this June.
