Ministry of Defense Pilots Teradata Warehousing System

LONDON, ENGLAND -- Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), today announced it has signed an agreement to supply the UK Ministry of Defense (MOD) with a Teradata data warehouse solution to collect and analyse data about its Sea King helicopter fleet. The Sea King unit sees this data warehouse solution as one of the key enablers for meeting the strategic goal of reducing its output costs by 20% while improving the support provided to frontline commands. The high cost of running a modern helicopter fleet and the complexities associated with its support mean that the Sea King unit is faced with a difficult task. Currently, the MOD relies on data collected and stored on a number of disparate systems to provide information on the operational status, configuration and maintenance requirements of individual aircraft. The pilot program will explore the potential for Teradata to provide the platform for integrating data from the unit's existing logistics systems and hosting the necessary decision-support systems that will enable the unit to meet its challenging goal. Teradata was awarded the contract in March after it was put out to European tender by the MOD. The 26 companies that responded were reduced to a shortlist of five, from which Teradata was chosen ahead of fierce competition. A team of Teradata consultants will work with the MOD to implement and develop the system. If the current six-month pilot delivers the anticipated benefits, application of this technology to other aircraft fleets will be explored. Dan Harrington, vice president for NCR's Teradata Division in Northern Europe, said, "The MOD is committed to reducing the costs of maintaining its helicopter fleet, and this project underscores its determination to do this. It is particularly pleasing to have won the business following a highly competitive bid process, which is an endorsement of both our solutions and consultancy expertise."
