Mindspeed Introduces High-Performance Burst-Mode Transimpedance Amplifier For Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Networks

Mindspeed Technologies unveiled a 1.25 gigabit per second (Gbps) complement to its 10 Gbps Ethernet Passive Optical Network (10G-EPON) burst-mode receiver chipset that delivers a complete solution for GEPON/10G-EPON optical line termination (OLT) receiver equipment used in central office (CO) locations.

Mindspeed's M02038 1.25 Gbps transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for CO-side OLT equipment can be used with the company's previously announced M02028 continuous-mode 1.25 Gbps TIA for subscriber-side Optical Networking Units (ONU) equipment, which creates an end-to-end solution for GEPON applications. Mindspeed also offers a receiver solution for next generation higher-speed 10G-EPON applications, consisting of its 10Gbps M02138 burst-mode TIA for OLT equipment. Each of Mindspeed's end-to-end solutions is also complemented by ONU and OLT laser drivers and post amplifiers to create complete solutions on each side of the link.

"Mindspeed continues to extend one of the industry's most comprehensive semiconductor portfolios for accelerating the build-out of worldwide fiber-access networks," said Hasnain Bajwa, senior vice president and general manager of the high-performance analog (HPA) business unit at Mindspeed. "The M02038 is the latest addition to our burst mode TIA portfolio, delivering best in class performance for next generation GEPON OLT designs and is a natural complement to our existing ONU PMD portfolio."

"We are very pleased to design in Mindspeed's TIAs for GEPON ONU and OLT applications in several of our optical transceiver products" said Dr. David Li, CTO with Hisense Broadband Multimedia Technology Co., Ltd., a leading FTTx optical module manufacturer. "Mindspeed TIAs deliver superior optical sensitivity along with many other performance advantages. These best-in-class GEPON solutions will enable us to win designs and grow our market share."

Product Details

Mindspeed's M02038 TIA includes a unique burst-mode receiver average power monitor output feature that enables the device to report upstream ONU burst mode optical transmit power in fast settling time, eliminating the need for adding complex and expensive external circuitry to OLT modules for performing this function. Key M02038 performance attributes include optical sensitivity exceeding -34dBm, -6dBm overload and burst-to-burst dynamic range of greater than 25 dB with a fast, 200 nanosecond (ns) burst settling time.

The M02038 TIA is delivered in die form and manufactured using standard cost-effective complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process technology to provide a low-power, low-cost solution.

Mindspeed will be demonstrating its GEPON ONU and OLT chipset solutions including the M02028, M02038 and M02098 devices and other members of its family of physical media device (PMD) solutions for GPON, XG-PON and 10G-EPON at the China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE), September 6-9, 2011, in Booth #B670/672 at the Shenzhen Exhibition and Convention Center in Shenzhen, China.
