Cyber security expert to provide online protection methods in ACFE webinar

In recent years there has been a profound increase in the quantity and magnitude of cyber intrusions. Any organization that keeps customer records, financial data and other information is vulnerable to attack from shady characters with shifting motives and the ability to wreak havoc in any location or industry.

 The nature of these new threats, and the measures needed to protect against them, are the subjects of a unique webinar, “Threats in the Age of Wikileaks,” hosted by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) next Thursday, Oct. 27. The 55,000-member strong ACFE is the world’s largest anti-fraud organization and premier provider of anti-fraud training and education.

 Cyber security expert James J. Butterworth, CFE, Chief Security Officer for HBGary, Inc., will host the online session, which is geared toward IT and security professionals, compliance officers, network administrators and anti-fraud professionals. Butterworth has 15 years of “in-the-trench” experience in computer network operations and incident response, having conducted engagements worldwide, in every industry.

 Lasting one hour and forty minutes, “Threats in the Age of Wikileaks” will provide focused instruction on the following critical issues:

• Working with "virtual" informants: are you being played?
• Use of social engineering to advance your investigation
• How do these groups communicate?
• History and rise of cyber looting
• Navigating a complicated international legal framework
• Maneuvering through DMCA compliance
• Working with law enforcement

The threat of cyber attack is an urgent one, Butterworth noted, with hackers realizing there is a quick financial gain through online exploitation.

 “Information translates to dollars on the black market,” Butterworth said. “There is money to be made by hackers and mischievous people. This (illegal activity) is going on a lot more than people realize.”
