NOAA's Supercomputer to Rely on ReadVerify Tape Storage
Crossroads Systems announced that CSC's North American Public Sector has deployed ReadVerify Appliance (RVA) for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to monitor archived environmental data stored on tape. This work is under the NOAA Research and Development High Performance Computing System contract that CSC won in 2010 to build a supercomputer for modeling weathering patterns. The $317 million contract is an indefinite-delivery, indefinite quantity contract that has a four-year base period, one four-year option and one-year transition option.
NOAA tracks and analyzes data from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor in order to best inform citizens of impending changes in their environment. To optimize performance in NOAA's expansive tape libraries, RVA proactively validates the integrity of tape library systems to save time and money.
With advances in technology, NOAA continues to have an ever-growing amount of archived data. In its High Performance Computing (HPC) environment terabytes of data are produced on a weekly basis, making secure digital storage space essential for many petabytes of irreplaceable files.
With real-time alerts and reporting on the utilization of NOAA's libraries, drives and tapes, RVA provides a comprehensive view of all library components and removes the "trial and error" approach to solving problems.
"With various file types and multiple locations, the NOAA archive is dependent on a central directory of operations," stated Tracey Wilson, product and system manger of CSC's North American Public Sector who heads NOAA's tape library monitoring. "By deploying RVA at each NOAA geographical location, CSC can obtain a consolidated view of all archive components and metrics to provide a more efficient managed service for NOAA for improved performance and user experience."
"With organizations such as CSC and NOAA choosing RVA to maximize the performance of some of the largest archives in the country, Crossroads is confident it offers the most proactive and comprehensive monitoring and reporting tool in the industry," said Elaine Pleshek, senior product manager at Crossroads Systems. "Crossroads is pleased to work with CSC to help protect invaluable data that our nation depends upon each and every day."
