Galician SMEs leading the national identity in the cloud

  • A new development in places qualified electronic signature in Galicia forefront of new Internet services

  • Transfer Model: The project is a collaboration ALDABA-Universidade de Vigo, Galicia Supercomputing Center

The ALDABA Galician SMEs (small and medium businesses) in collaboration with the Group Information Technology (GTI) of the Universidade de Vigo shall, the first quarter of 2011, the project www: SLA @ cloud. This new system, only in Spain, provides the basis to establish and control level agreements secured service, SLAs (Service Level Agreements), between a supplier of infrastructure Cloud Computing (Cloud Computing) and a client that requires these services.

This system applies to the realm of cloud computing several of the project's achievements of collaboration in 2007 jointly developed ALDABA, the GTI and UVigo Supercomputing Center of Galicia, CESGA: IFEC project (Infrastructure Qualified Electronic Signature), which managed to overcome the inherent constraints of digital identity certificates, such as electronic ID when it comes to play the role of the person signing, by building a robust system based on certificates digital time stamping of attributes (timestamps).

Transfer model

This project has already been recognized by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and for the Information Society, Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade and is part of the project selected under the 2009 R & D Plan Avanza because it "directly advances the Spanish industrial participation in building called "Future Internet" allowing an SME ALDABA in close collaboration with leading research groups of a university, GTI, develop new products and services with a significant ICT component in the forefront of Cloud Computing technology and Web 2.0 (Internet Services)."

According to Jose Antonio Castelao, one of the partners ALDABA, "university collaboration business-technology center generates a perfect ecosystem for testing projects research, facilitating the transfer of knowledge to industry."

www: SLA @ cloud The advantage of the new development, for it has existed until now is that it is applicable to all what can be consumed in the cloud remote is capable of contract.

The system created by Galician researchers and engineers  fills a gap in the growing market of new services "cloud computing", because until now Warranty computing infrastructure services was based on trust between the provider and the user, under the terms of the contract defined by the SLAs. However www: @ cloud SLA ensures that the demand for service from from a source approved by the client entity, with the addition of allocation attribute certificates, which establish the role each user plays in the system and its ability to request certain services according to policies established in the agreement.

To establish this Agreement is specified called meta xSLAml through which we express the conditions that should govern the provision of service receive the virtual infrastructure client.

The procedure implements a control logic paradigm based on RBAC (Role Base Access Control) to evaluate the application of real-time service and, if this assessment is positive, dynamic order the provision of services demanded. Thus, the module called DRP (Dynamic Resource Provisioning) is responsible for 'building' under demand requested resources such as virtual machines or space storage.

Finally, we have developed within www: SLA @ cloud a polling mechanism of parameters established in the agreement to assess compliance and report correct any deviation to occur between the service contract and the actually received. All these quality controls are digitally signed service incorporating stamps time from a Time Stamp Authority (TSA) to ensure validity against third parties.

ALDABA is an ICT company that currently has around fifty Engineers trained in the Galician universities and is specialized in technological solutions to optimize business processes and business Institutions.

Group Information Technology (GTI), created within the University Vigo with the ultimate goal of research in the area of telematics and engineering conducting pre-competitive development for technology transfer to companies.

THE CESGA

The Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA) that depends on the Department of Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) is an organization with a history of 18 years. Its purpose is investigate, promote and disseminate compute-intensive services and communications to Galician research communities and the CSIC, as well as companies or institutions upon request.
