C-DAC Conducts HPC Workshop in Vietnam

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the Indo-Vietnam joint research project has conducted a  Workshop during 21st December 2010 till 24th December 2010  on "Research Development and Application of High Performance Computing" at Hanoi University of Science and Technology supported by MOST, Vietnam and DST, Govt. of India.

The objective of the project is to advance the technical and scientific cooperation between India and Vietnam through the scientists exchange programme in the field of HPC, Grid Computing, Modelling and Simulation.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Ha Duyen Tu, Vice President HUST, Hanoi. Dr. Thai Van Tan, Former Vice Director General of the Dept for Intl Relations, MOST; Dr. Rupin Sharma, the First Secretary of the Embassy of India; Prof Nguyen Thanh Thuy, Director HPCC, HUT  also graced the occasion.

The workshop was focused to give an  insight into the different aspects of HPC from both hardware and software point of view with the notion of capability building in solving challenging problems in the field of Bioinformatics, Seismic, Climatology, Structural Mechanics, Materials Modelling, Fluid Dynamics, Financial Modelling etc. The workshop participants included professors, researchers, application developers from different Institutions, Universities in Hanoi and other cities of Vietnam.

C-DAC experts gave insight into current and emerging HPC technologies, Cloud Computing, Grid Computing, GPGPU Computing, Hardware Accelerators, Parallel Programming models and Cluster Administration. Additionally demonstration of CHReME (C-DAC HPC Resource Management Engine) an indigenously developed HPC tool along with the Research and Development activities at C-DAC using HPC Systems was also provided. The workshop included both theoretical and practical sessions, enabling the participants to solve their domain related application problems and proliferate their research with efficient use of HPC Facility.

During this visit, C-DAC experts provided a proposed HPC system configuration and the Data Centre layout as well as site brief to HUT scientists regarding the preparation requirements supposed to be executed for installation.

Shri Goldi Misra, Group Coordinator & Head, HPC Solutions Group, C-DAC, Pune briefed that the Indo–Vietnam joint research project will bring technical and scientific cooperation between India and Vietnam. This workshop would help scientists, researchers at HUT and other research laboratories of Vietnam in being at par with the latest HPC technologies and its scientific applications.

Shri Prashant Dinde, Team Coordinator, HPC Solutions Group, C-DAC, Pune, who takes care of international collaboration briefed that the workshop aims to give an insight in High Performance Computing  solving challenge problems in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Climatology,  Structural Mechanics, Astrophysics & Astronomy, Fluid Dynamics, etc. It included theoretical, as well as, hands-on sessions to enable the participants understand how to solve their domain related application problems on HPC systems.

Dr. Pradeep Sinha, Senior Director, HPC, C-DAC congratulated the team for successfully conducting the workshop. He added that C-DAC will continue to make such efforts for proliferation of HPC technologies both nationally and internationally for the larger benefit of end user of HPC systems.
