Caltech to Demo Large-Scale Data Transfer Using Nexsan SATABeast at SC10

Nexsan has announced that Caltech will be using Nexsan SATABeast storage systems for its 2010 demonstration of high-volume remote data transfers during SC10, the international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. The conference, to be held in New Orleans, November 13-19, 2010, will feature Caltech's high-energy physics team's planned demonstration of high throughput scientific dataset transfers. Last year, the demonstration established a world-record data transfer between Northern and Southern hemispheres, sustaining 8.26 Gbps on each of two 10 Gbps links between Sao Paulo and Miami.

For the demonstration, Nexsan storage will be connected to high-speed servers on the show floor. The display will work to outperform last year's demonstration which achieved a bi-directional peak throughput of 119 Gbps and a data flow of more than 110 Gbps sustained among a cluster of servers on the show floor and at Caltech, Michigan, San Diego, Florida, Fermilab, Brookhaven, CERN, Brazil, Korea and Estonia. This year's demonstration will also involve actual data from 7 Tera-electron volt collisions recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider during the last months.

"In choosing a storage technology, we needed a very reliable, high density, high performance solution to assure that we could achieve our goals for this year's demonstration," said Harvey B. Newman, professor of physics, Caltech, who leads the exhibit. "With hundreds of terabytes of data reliably stored on Nexsan systems for more than seven years at Caltech's Center for Advanced Computing Research, we are glad to have their storage systems at the center of our demonstrations."

"We are excited to be a part of Caltech's impressive large-volume data transfer demonstration during SC10," said Victoria Grey, senior vice president of marketing at Nexsan. "Large-scale data transfers have become an important technology demand for today's regional and global organizations. Reliability, performance and value are all critical criteria for any organization with large volumes of data to manage, and Nexsan solutions are an excellent fit."

In addition to being a key component of the Caltech demonstration, Nexsan will be showcasing advanced storage solutions for bulk storage, virtualized server storage, cloud storage, secure online archiving and data protection in booth #1949 during SC10.
