Louisiana Optical Network Initiative Installing High-Speed Network Resources For SCinet, SC10’s Ultra-High Bandwidth Network
Media invited to register, visit network operations center at SC10
Key leaders from the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, along with high-performance computing staff members from Louisiana State University, are now in New Orleans building SCinet, the SC10 conference network. This robust infrastructure, built with $23 million in donated equipment, will support the more than 10,000 attendees who are expected to participate in SC10, Nov. 13-19 in New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
For the week of the conference, New Orleans will be home to one of the most powerful networks in the world. Built each year for the annual SC conference, SCinet will deliver more than 260 Gigabits per second (Gbps) in bandwidth. SCinet provides the platform SC exhibitors and attendees require to showcase the revolutionary high performance computing (HPC) applications and networking experiments that have become the trademark of the conference.
The SC10 conference has partnered with LONI, a high-speed, fiber optic network that connects supercomputing resources among six universities and the two LSU health sciences centers in Louisiana, to provide the high performance, wide-area networking resources needed to build and operate SCinet.
LONI staff will begin work in the convention center to install equipment and lay fiber so SCinet will be available when attendees arrive in New Orleans. LONI will support 16 10-Gbps waves from LSU, located in Baton Rouge, La., to accommodate the network, which will be routed to SC10 through the LONI connection at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
Cisco Systems, Inc. has provided LONI with networking equipment to facilitate network connections between the two cities and ensure robust support and timely data transfer during SC10, and has provided LONI their latest generation of 40G technology in additional to other network equipment. Another company, tw telecom, has contributed fiber to build the network between LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and the Morial Convention Center.
Members of the media are invited to visit the on-site network operations center and see the network in action during SC10. Media registration for the conference is now open.
