Appro Announces Support for AMD Opteron 6200 Series Processors with New System Designs for High Performance, Scalability and Efficiency

Appro has announced the design support for 2- and 4-processor next generation server platforms based on the new AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors offering up to 16 core configurations allowing customers to choose the right balance of clock speed and core count, perfectly matching their HPC applications.  This upgrade delivers improved performance, scalability, efficiency and value over prior offerings while maintaining platform consistency that scales for memory- and compute-intensive HPC workloads.  The next generation Appro server platforms based on the AMD Opteron 6200 Series processor are projected to be available in Q4/2011 and early Q1 2012. Also, Appro will be demonstrating its next generation AMD Opteron based servers and supercomputers at SC11 booth # 2312, November 14-17.

The new AMD Opteron-based Appro servers will feature 8-, 12- and 16- core-density offering 160 percent more cores than current generation servers for handling more threads per node. It offers four channels of DDR3 memory with the support of additional Northbridge enhancements for 73 percent more memory throughput to scale as workloads grow.  The new upgraded Appro server platforms will take advantage of AMD’s innovative Flex FP design that brings 256-bit floating point processing to the mainstream with more throughput for both 128-bit and 256-bit technical applications.  Also, the new AMD Opteron processors offer Turbo CORE technology allowing the “Bulldozer” cores to boost performance up to 500MHz simultaneously. In addition, the new Appro server platforms can help companies get more out of their IT investment by maintaining server platform consistency from the entry-level to advanced HPC mission critical applications, enabling drop-in upgradeability for the next-generation AMD core.

“We are pleased to take advantage of today’s newly launched AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors that will be the foundation of Appro’s next generation supercomputer building block server platforms” said John Lee, vice president of Advanced Technology Solutions Group at Appro. “These upgraded server platforms will offer a strong HPC value proposition by bringing greater thread density, faster memory throughput and power efficiency to tackle larger research projects quicker and more efficiently.”

“AMD and Appro collaborate to deliver HPC solutions that maximize system performance-per-watt with improved memory bandwidth while continuing to push the envelope for scalability,” said Paul Struhsaker, corporate vice president and general manager, Commercial Business at AMD. “The AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors are designed to handle critical workloads without compromising performance, scalability or energy efficiency for the HPC market.”
