Storage Area Networks and Clustering to Experience Significant Growth
Almost 3 in 5 enterprise developers are expecting to increase the use of Storage Area Networks (SANs) and clustering in the next two years according to market research company, Evans Data Corporation's recent Enterprise Development Survey. At the same time, a third of enterprise developers are expecting to decrease their use of mainframes. Mobile applications are also expected to see major uptakes in adoption with 52% of respondents indicating an increase in their use in the next two years. See Web site. "The rise of the use of clustering makes good business sense since downtime online translates directly into lost revenue and clustering allows for load balancing and fault tolerance to keep servers up and running and serving employee, client and new customer needs," said John Andrews, President and Chief Operating Officer of Evans Data. "The use of SANs for storage is smart as well because they allow systems to be administered, added or removed easily without affecting the overall system adversely." Other findings from the December 2005 survey of nearly 400 enterprise developers: -- J2EE is used in the enterprise by more than 60% of developers, an 11% increase in six months, while just under 40% of developers in Small to Medium Businesses make use of the language. -- In the last year the use of Unix (all flavors including Mac OS X but not including Linux) in the enterprise has grown by almost 40% while Windows (all versions) use has dropped by 18%. -- The top three security solutions for wireless devices are: mobile anti-virus software, 19%; content filtering, 18%; and, requiring critical updates before access to the enterprise is granted, 18%.
