StorageTek Names Technology Innovators to Fellows Program

LOUISVILLE, Colo. -- Great inventors such as Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, Alexander Graham Bell, and Eli Whitney might have wished for a place where they would have been recognized by their employers and peers for their technical achievements. StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp.) (NYSE:STK) is pleased and proud to recognize its innovative employees who achieve beyond expectation and, in doing so, benefit the company in a myriad of ways. Like these great scientists, StorageTek's technology leaders are given the title of StorageTek Fellow because they never give up and make StorageTek the storage world's leading technology innovator. The StorageTek Fellows Program is a recognized group of engineers who demonstrate outstanding excellence and innovation at StorageTek, over an extended period of time. The two newest Fellows exemplify the hall of fame performance this honor demands. Between them, Michael Leonhardt and Charles Milligan have more than 125 issued and pending patents under their belts, and they played critical roles in developing StorageTek breakthroughs like Iceberg, the 4480 tape drive and the 4400 library products. "These are the individuals who define technology innovation," said Patrick J. Martin, StorageTek chairman, president and CEO. "We honor them because they have consistently delivered creative, groundbreaking work. They are the leaders for our company and for the industry." Leonhardt, a 30-year veteran of the storage industry, was instrumental in StorageTek's early work on optical recording, the 4480 tape drive, small libraries and tape arrays. As a member of the Advanced Technology team, he conceived and launched projects that lead to the development of the RedWood and T9840 tape drives. Milligan, a member of the Advanced Technology and Systems Analysis teams, managed the system software development for the 4480 tape drive and the 4400 library products. In addition, Milligan was a key member of the product architecture for several of StorageTek's signature products, including the Iceberg virtual disk subsystem, the RedWood tape drive, Narrow Track Longitudinal tape and the T9840 tape drive, all of which were considered to be leading-edge innovations when they were introduced. Dr. Richard Dee of Louisville and James Hughes of Minneapolis, two long- time Fellows, were also promoted to Senior Fellows to recognize their technical leadership. Dee was recognized for his continued exceptional work in magnetics and tape research and development, Hughes for his pursuit of high performance software platforms for storage management and information security. The four Fellows serve as mentors within the company, and carry the StorageTek banner to industry and academic meetings. Additionally, the Fellows serve as key advisors to top management, engineering groups and customers, focusing on state of the art solutions and research for further advancement of the storage industry. The StorageTek Fellows program, similar to other corporate programs, represents less than five percent of the engineering team.
