StorageTek's Tape Drives Offered For TimberWolf 9710 Library Series

LOUISVILLE, CO -- StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp.) (NYSE: STK), an expert in high-performance, efficient digitized data storage, further increased the value of its TimberWolf(R) 9710 tape libraries by adding support for the newly released T9840B and backward-read compatible Super DLT (SDLT) tape drives. Previously offered with the T9840A and DLT 7000 tape drives, the total capacity and performance of the TimberWolf 9710 will be significantly improved with the T9840B and SDLT tape drives, both of which enable customers to maximize their equipment investments and extend the longevity of their TimberWolf 9710 by doubling the library's performance and tripling its capacity. "StorageTek's commitment to protecting customers' technology investments and increasing the value of deployed products and solutions just took another step forward with this announcement. By enabling support for the T9840B and SDLT tape drives in the TimberWolf 9710, StorageTek offers customers freedom of choice in state-of-the-art tape technology. Now they can more cost effectively meet the growing storage needs of their enterprises," said Pete Koliopoulos, StorageTek director of Marketing, Automated Tape Solutions. Announced in October, the T9840B is the world's fastest tape drive and capable of nearly doubling the performance of the TimberWolf 9710 from 10 MB/sec to 19 MB/sec. The T9840B uses the same data cartridge as the T9840A so it seamlessly complements the T9840A tape drive in the library, or it can replace the T9840A altogether for significant performance improvements. The T9840B tape drive is offered with either SCSI or native Fibre Channel interfaces. Quantum's next-generation SDLT tape drive for the TimberWolf 9710 more than triples the capacity of the existing DLT 7000, with SDLT's 110 GB cartridge. This allows for scalability up to almost 65 TB within the 9710. The SDLT is offered in the Backward-Read Compatible version to further protect StorageTek customers' investments in legacy DLT media. The T9840B and SDLT tape drives for the TimberWolf 9710 will be available worldwide starting Dec. 1, 2001. List pricing for the T9840B with the 2 GB/sec Fibre Channel interface is approximately $38,000 and the SCSI interface lists for approximately $33,000. The list price of the SDLT backward-read compatible drive is approximately $11,500. (All prices are U.S.) For more information, see www.storagetek.com
