Sun Microsystems Boosts Industry's Fastest Growing Server Line
Sun Microsystems announced an extension to its systems portfolio with new powerful and efficient Sun Fire servers and Sun Ultra Workstations. Optimized for the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), these new offerings build upon the momentum Sun has achieved with the recently announced year-over-year increases in worldwide revenue and marketshare in Q206 (Reference: IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, August 2006), and will help customers increase data center efficiency and lower operational costs. The latest additions to the Sun Systems portfolio include:
- First-ever Sun Netra blade servers with breakthrough energy efficient CoolThreads technology for telecommunications applications; - Nearly 20 percent performance boost for new Sun Fire workgroup servers, outfitted with high-performance UltraSPARC IIIi processors with increased memory and throughput, and the industry's best investment protection with the binary compatibility of the Solaris OS; - New lowest-cost Sun Ultra 25 Workstation with a 300 percent performance increase and key software pre-installed to aid in development of new applications: Solaris 10 OS, Sun Studio, Sun Java Studio Creator, and Sun Java Studio Enterprise; - Sun Secure Application Switch N1216 that helps systems to increase resource utilization and security across the Sun Fire family of systems. "We continue to raise the bar with powerful new enhancements to our Sun Fire server family that are optimized for the Solaris Operating System, and offer significant advantages to customers." Sun Adds Muscle to Sun Fire "CoolThreads" Server Family Sun today announced significant features and performance enhancements to the Sun Fire "CoolThreads" line: - New CoolThreads Netra servers with the Solaris 10 OS further extend Sun's industry leadership in the telecommunications industry by delivering breakthrough performance and energy efficiency. The UltraSPARC T1 processor's 32-threads provide extreme throughput and energy efficiency in a rack mount or ATCA blade configuration, allowing OEMs to scale for price/performance with four, six or eight cores, and up to 32 threads, in either form factor. With a depth of under 20 inches, the Netra T2000 easily integrates into standard rack configurations, and is fully compatible with the entire line of Netra products; - A series of new enhancements to the Sun Fire T1000 system, which deliver 23 percent higher availability and up to 300 percent higher performance for disk operations. Additional enhancements include higher levels of security and an upgrade of the standard warranty from three months to one year (backdated to all existing Sun Fire T1000 systems purchased). Pricing and Availability The Sun Fire workgroup servers running the UltraSPARC IIIi processors are available soon. Pricing begins at $2,195 for the Sun Fire V125 server. The Sun Secure Application Switch N1216 starts at $20,995 and will be available in October. The Netra T2000 server starts at $9,995 and is available now.
