Hundreds of Global Customers Choose Sun Microsystems

During its quarterly earnings call Sun Microsystems profiled some of the hundreds of new and current customers that chose Sun products in its fiscal second quarter. Demonstrating continued market momentum in core industries such as financial services and telecommunications, customers are rapidly adopting the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), Sun Java Enterprise System, Sun storage products, and Sun's comprehensive line of industry-standard Sun Fire servers. "In the last few years we've completely overhauled our product line and approach to the marketplace," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's president and chief operating officer. "Innovation is the fuel that drives competitive advantage and we'll continue to deliver innovative new products and business models that give our customers the edge they need to win." Recent customers worldwide that have signed with Sun include: Abacus Abacus, the leading provider of cooperative data, data management and analytical services for direct marketing, purchased three UltraSPARC IV & Sun Fire V490 servers, three Sun Fire V440 servers and two Sun Fire V240 servers, and three Sun Fire V20z servers each with two dual-core AMD Opteron processors. Abacus will run its own large Data Warehousing application that builds lists for direct marketing activities, and will leverage Sun services to help manage its entire data center. Accor Group Accor Group, a European leader and one of the world's largest groups in travel, tourism and corporate services, chose Sun Microsystems to help consolidate and streamline IT operations supporting 140,000 people in 140 countries. In selecting UltraSPARC IV Sun Fire V890 servers attached to Sun StorEdge 6130 arrays, Accor can more easily and cost-effectively gather the accountability of more than 4000 hotels, share corporate applications worldwide, unify financial reporting systems, optimize and reduce the time to publish financial results. American Express American Express has chosen Sun to provide a new integrated software environment for critical applications in its global IT infrastructure. The agreement includes the purchase of licensing subscriptions, services and support for the Sun Java Enterprise System, growing the total number of subscribers to significantly over one million and continuing Sun's momentum in financial services. Additionally, American Express plans to use the Solaris OS as a platform supporting this new integrated software environment. B&H Photo B&H Photo, the world's largest high-end professional photo, video and audio company, selected Sun StorEdge 9985 systems to power its rapidly growing Internet business. The recent investment in Sun storage solutions builds on a more than 10-year relationship between Sun and B&H Photo. B&H expects the Sun StorEdge Systems to be a cornerstone to their data-centric enterprise compute environment and "Always On" Internet presence. Bosch Group Bosch Group, the leading global manufacturer of automotive and industrial technology, consumer goods, and building technology, licensed Sun Identity Manager including Support Services for a large number of accounts. China Eastern Airline One of the largest airline operators in the country, China Eastern Airline (CEA) recently completed its Airline Operation Control (AOC) Sun Microsystems- based hardware platform. The AOC, powered by Sun Fire and Sun StorEdge servers, monitors and controls flight schedules, pilot arrangement and crew management for all of the airline's flights worldwide. Emergis Emergis, a North American leader in powering eBusiness transactions, selected Sun Microsystems to help manage the hundreds of servers in its data center. Through Sun Preventive Services, Emergis can reduce the cost and complexity of its Business Critical data center including products from Sun's Storage and Server groups such as a vast array of SunFire and Netra Servers, Mid-range servers, as well as Sun's Enterprise servers. Equifax Equifax, a global leader in turning information into intelligence, selected Sun Microsystems to help save costs by streamlining compliance functionalities and software licensing. Leveraging Java Enterprise System and the Sun Java Identity Management Suite, Equifax is reducing overall costs. The savings are allowing the company to divert resources and pursue business initiatives such as a new B2B portal that marries its various retail, commercial and credit applications. Guangdong Mobile Communication Corporation Guangdong Mobile Communication Corporation (GMCC) is the largest provincial level mobile communication carrier in China. GMCC selected two SE9990, three SF6900, five SF4900, 21 sets of 490, one L180, one B2000, one 440, CS integration service, and six years of SunSpectrum Gold service to implement the Datacenter OA and Portal Project. The Sun solution was chosen to provide scalability, stability, performance and openness necessary for this project. Harrods Harrods, the world famous London department store, selected the Sun Java Integration Suite to support and enhance its growing multi-channel retail operations. Harrods, like many retailers today, is faced with the challenge of creating a more efficient business model that both improves customer service and reduces the cost of ongoing operations. To address these challenges, Harrods is expanding its use of information technology, and has selected a suite of products from Sun that will help to preserve its existing IT investments while enhancing business agility and improving customer experience. NewEnergy Associates NewEnergy Associates, a Siemens Company, provides software, energy business solutions, and industry expertise to more than 200 clients throughout the world. The company helps customers to meet the largest challenges in strategic and financial planning, energy market and transmission analysis, energy trading, risk management, as well as retail and wholesale energy market operations. Recently, NewEnergy added to its Solaris 10 implementation and purchased Sun Fire X4100 and X4200s servers to augment its Grid computing calculation/processing power, and add virtualized developer workstations and servers for development and testing. Cost/performance and heat and power savings were crucial to NewEnergy Associates in its latest decision to buy Sun technology. Ningbo Bird Co. Ltd. As the leading mobile handset manufacturer in China, Ningbo Bird Co. Ltd. is cooperating with Sun in an overall sphere of Java(TM) ME technology. Bird has successfully ported Sun's OI in the high end handsets and by the means of JLE support, Bird is establishing her own Java technology know-how and Java technical team, to research and develop new Java-enabled mobile solutions, and offer high quality and highly cost-effective Java technology mobile phones to users all over China and the world today. Northwestern University Northwestern University selected Sun Microsystems to replace a homegrown identity management system with limited capabilities. Leveraging Solaris 10 OS, Sun Fire V210z servers and the Java Enterprise System including Sun Java Identity Manager and Sun Java Access Manager, Northwestern University can roll-out new, single sign-on and identity management that is flexible, affordable and compatible with the standards of its numerous academic and administrative applications. Philadelphia Stock Exchange The Philadelphia Stock Exchange purchased Sun Microsystems technologies to support their new Electronic Options Trading System (PHLX XL). The new infrastructure, based on Solaris 10 OS supports a hybrid electronic trading environment running Sun Fire servers and it is designed to handle more than 120,000 messages per second while keeping cooling costs down. Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China, Ltd. Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China, Ltd. (Ping An), one of the most comprehensive financial entities in China, is basing its Data Center Expansion Project on Sun Microsystems. Touting the scalability, stability, performance and openness of the Sun Fire servers, Ping An selected Sun to help provide financial services including life insurance, property insurance, banking and trusts to its customers. Ping An also purchased five years of SunSpectrum Gold Service Plan. The Province of Nova Scotia The Province of Nova Scotia added Sun's newest server, the Sun Fire T2000 running the Solaris 10 OS, to its enterprise. The system delivers flexibility in addressing the province's dramatic growth in SAP and Oracle clients and application implementations for human resources and business warehousing. In addition to providing outstanding performance, the Sun solution was also chosen for the benefits it delivers in power consumption, floor space, cooling, acquisition and support costs. They also anticipate significant advantages from the virtualization capabilities of Solaris 10 OS. The province is currently running SAP and Oracle on a Sun Fire 15K. Scripps Florida Scripps Florida selected Sun for a stable, scalable and cost-effective compute cluster solution to support bio-research initiatives. The new compute cluster is comprised of Sun Fire V20z and V40z servers running Sun N1 Grid Engine and attached to Sun StorEdge 3510 FC arrays. The Sun Solution Center for High Performance Computing was engaged to conduct benchmark tests with customer applications, and the Sun Customer Ready Systems Program to pre-load, -integrate, and -test the solution prior to shipment. Sun also provided Scripps Florida with onsite implementation services, support services and new systems' training. The compute cluster is running multiple bio-research tools and applications for more than 100 researchers at the Florida-based research organization. Service New Brunswick Service New Brunswick, the provincial government's chief provider of front-line services to the public has chosen Sun Microsystems solutions to address their need for better enterprise back-up and to enhance their e-Government service delivery. The new system, consisting of Sun Fire V440, V240, V480 servers, a Sun StorEdge 3510 SAN and L25 Tape Drive offers high-performance and better utilization of data storage resources for Service New Brunswick's one-stop approach to providing more than 200 federal, provincial and municipal government services. When fully implemented, Service New Brunswick will reduce operational and IT maintenance costs and complement their Sun-based solution with Sun Premium and Gold Spectrum Services. Sparkassen-Informatik (SI) Sparkassen-Informatik (SI) chose Sun Microsystems to maximize its IT investments. Purchasing a nine million dollar services agreement, the major service provider of the German savings banks feels confident its hardware and software is optimized for its data center to help reduce total cost of ownership. Synnex Technology International Corporation Synnex Technology International Corporation is the largest 3C retailer in Asia Pacific with annual revenues over US$4 billion in 2005. The company is an innovative IT adopter aiming to provide integrated supply chain services in the IT industry. Currently they have operation centers in 16 countries. This is a strategic win for Sun Taiwan as Synnex was originally the major account and business partner of HP. Tokyo Institute of Technology One of the world's leading technical institutes, Tokyo Institute of Technology, is creating Japan's largest supercomputer on Sun technology to help its science and engineering researchers dramatically increase their productivity. The system will be based on Sun Fire x64 servers with 10,480 AMD Opteron processor cores -- totaling more than 50 trillion floating point operations per second. Using Sun N1 System Manager and Sun N1 Grid Engine software, the system will be provisioned to support the Solaris 10 Operating System as well as Linux operating environment. The grid-based supercomputer plans to expand to more than 100 teraFLOPS by its operation in Spring 2006 and is moving toward becoming one of the five largest supercomputers in the world as ranked by Top 500 in Summer 2006. The Trimac Group The Trimac Group of companies are in the business of providing truck transportation and related distribution and management services. The company's innovative use of IT in bulk trucking provides value added services to customers and supports efficient internal processes. As North America's premier provider of services in highway transportation of bulk commodities, Trimac knows a thing or two about safe storage and superior delivery service. When it was time to upgrade its technology infrastructure, the company chose to consolidate on Sun servers, storage, software and services. Trimac has invested in a highly scalable and stable system built on Sun's SPARC-powered V440 and V240 servers, running Solaris, and a StorEdge 9990 System for secure, highly available information storage. Sun Professional Services is working closely with Trimac to help design, deploy and manage the new system. University of Alberta, Faculty of Engineering Sun Fire Server and StorEdge technologies are continuing to shape nanotechnology research being conducted by University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering. Building on investments in Sun technology made in 2003, the award winning research team has commenced a second phase of their IT system expansion with the acquisition of Sun Fire V40z and X4100 servers as well as Sun StorEdge 6130 and 6920 arrays running on Solaris OS. The new x64 implementation will help facilitate future growth, reduce operating costs and increase the University of Alberta's ability to develop research tools necessary for retaining its position among the top six international leaders in nanotechnology research. University of California, Los Angeles The Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, UCLA (LONI) has selected Sun systems, software and services as the computational infrastructure for its comprehensive mapping of brain structure and function. By studying and comparing the structure and function of healthy and unhealthy brains, LONI's seeks to better understand brain development and the differences between healthy and diseased brains. LONI has already made significant advances in understanding Alzheimer's, AIDS and brain development. LONI is using over 300 Sun Fire V20z servers running the Solaris 10 OS, the Sun N1 GridEngine and Sun Control. The University of Southern California The University of Southern California (USC) Center for High-Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) added 360 of Sun's dual-core Sun Fire V20z x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers to its powerful supercomputer cluster. The HPCC selected the servers for their advanced cooling capabilities, smaller form factor, energy efficiency and superior price/performance. Driven by a steady desire to strengthen the performance and capability of its supercomputing server cluster, which is currently ranked as the 24th-fastest supercomputer in the world on the Top500 list, the recent addition of the Sun Fire V20z server increased USC's HPCC system total number of compute nodes from 1,716 to 1,830. Videotron ltee Videotron ltee, an integrated communications company wholly owned by Quebecor Media Inc., has substantially expanded its existing Sun Fire server infrastructure to continue growing its position as the leading provider of high-speed Internet access in the Quebec market. Currently supplying cable modem and dial-up services to 607,000 subscribers, the integration of Sun Fire X4200, V490 and V890 servers into a system currently running Sun Java Communications Express 6.2 equips Videotron with new capacity for growth customer base expansion.
