Hundreds of Global Customers Choose Sun Microsystems in Q1
Sun Microsystems today profiled some of the hundreds of new and current customers that chose Sun in its fiscal first quarter. Demonstrating continued market momentum in core industries such as financial services and telecommunications, customers are rapidly adopting the Solaris 10 operating system, Sun Java Enterprise System, Sun storage products, and Sun's comprehensive line of industry-standard Sun Fire servers. "Our customers compete in the world's fiercest markets and they look to Sun for innovation that gives them a competitive edge," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's president and chief operating officer. "As long as there are challenges to be met, customer appetite won't decline for the technology Sun delivers. We'll never stop innovating, because we know technical advantage helps our customers improve what's most important to them -- the bottom line." Recent customers worldwide that have signed with Sun include: Alberta Online Consortium and Open School BC Alberta Online Consortium, a leader in technology enhanced learning and Open School BC, a provider of high quality educational materials have implemented a shared Sun Fire Server infrastructure for access to a joint learning environment. The Sun Fire v20z and v40z system running on Solaris 10 enables shared access to a Linux-based Learning Content Management System (LCMS) from Sun partner The Learning Edge. This high-performance tool enables educators to electronically create, deliver, manage, and provide educational material and serves as the platform for kindergarten to grade 12 students in both provinces. Alcatel One of the leading provider of communications solutions to telecommunication carriers, Internet service providers and enterprises worldwide, Alcatel has signed a major cooperation agreement with Sun to further improve the cost-effectiveness of Alcatel's existing IT-based mobile core network solutions. This cooperation agreement also comes under Alcatel's global program for next-generation IT-based telecom solutions announced in February this year, and it underlines Sun's commitment to the telecom market and the AdvancedTCA form factor. The cooperation will initially focus on using Sun's carrier grade Solaris 10 operating system and Netra servers for the Alcatel 5020 Wireless Call server, Open Service Platform (OSP) for Intelligent Network (IN) services and the Operations & Maintenance Centre for Radio (OMC-R). Banco del Caribe Banco del Caribe, a leader providing integrated financial services in Venezuela, purchased a Sun Fire E6900 server to add processing capacity to its core banking system where all bank transactions are processed. The new Sun system will augment existing Sun Technology that Banco del Caribe has currently to provide for rapid business growth. Banco del Caribe continues to use Sun technology and services for a reliable secure and cost effective IT platform to support the banks business goals. Barmer Health Insurance Established more than 20 years ago, Germany's Barmer Health Insurance was facing high costs due to operating its legacy mainframe system and required more flexible deployment options to develop new services and adhere to emerging legal requirements. Barmer chose SAP running on Sun Fire E6900 due to its cost-effectiveness (offering up to 50% reduction in costs) and flexibility for dynamic reconfiguration of resources. Barmer is also leveraging StorEdge L700 and Sun Germany Client Solutions, which impressed the company with the competence, expertise and speed of the massive migration, which took only four months. Data Action Data Action, a leading provider of IT services for the banking industry in Australia, replaced its HP server and storage environment with a comprehensive Sun infrastructure. Data Action is using Sun Fire V890 servers, Sun StorEdge 9960 and 6130 storage systems and Sun StorageTek L60tape libraries with the Solaris OS, helping it achieve superior performing performance backed by a solid long-term roadmap. First Data Corporation First Data Corporation turned to Sun seeking a holistic approach for systems support and insight regarding risk management of IT processes and people across their geographically dispersed data center environments. After working closely with Sun to explore technologies and programs such as Sun Preventive Services, an assessment and mitigation offering that utilizes ITIL methodology, First Data Corporation agreed to adopt SPS as a strategy for risk aversion. Sun is evolving the relationship with First Data, demonstrating through the provision of committed resources and teaming that additional focus on prevention and operational excellence can yield a positive ROI. Georgetown University Medical Center Georgetown University Medical Center, a leader in healthcare technology research and physician education, selected Sun and InstantDx, a pioneer in e-prescribing, to power its regional health information network (RHIO) initiative and integrated learning laboratory. By using the Sun Java Integration Suite (formerly the SeeBeyond ICAN Suite) to integrate its existing network of electronic health record (EHR) systems, the Georgetown University Medical Center aims to help advance medical education, extend its vision for a connected healthcare community and share critical information across the entire region for increased patient safety. GSKV GSKV, a leading German service provider, chose Sun to deliver mission-critical service letter agreements (SLAs) to its customers through Sun Cluster, Sun Managed Services and SunSpectrum support. The system is based on the Solaris 8 operating system, which provided the company with the best possible Total Cost of Ownership. Additionally, GSKV has deployed Sun Fire E20K servers. Guangdong Local Taxation Bureau As a leader in tax industry technology in China, Guangdong Local Taxation Bureau implemented a province-level, centralized local taxation management information system project. The Guangdong Local Taxation Bureau chose two Sun Fire E25K servers and the Java Enterprise System (JES) to provide the critical scalability, performance, stability, portability and openness necessary for the project. HBO Media and entertainment leader HBO is relying on Sun Microsystems and Thomson Grass Valley to power their high-speed tapeless origination for high definition (HD) and standard definition networks. HBO has deployed two Sun Fire 6800 servers with 192 terabytes (TB) of Sun StorEdge 9990 storage to support HD video play-out. HBO has also deployed 12 TB of Sun StorEdge 5310 NAS storage to support a Video on Demand (VoD) initiative that streams video via their uplink to cable aggregation systems. In addition, they have implemented clustered Sun Fire V440 servers and a Sun StorEdge 3510 array to support an Oracle-based scheduling database along with Sun StorEdge QFS software for file management. "We have forged a strong relationship with the Sun organization for broadcast to air server and storage solutions," said Charles Cataldo, Senior Vice President, Operations and Engineering for HBO. "Sun StoreEdge technology is utilized exclusively within HBO's deep standard definition (SD) and HD on-air archive." Korea National Education Information Systems (NEIS) Sun has been selected as the leading system supplier for the Korean National Education Information System (NEIS) project. For this project, Sun will provide 1,200 Sun Fire V40z x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers equipped with the AMD Opteron(TM) processor, and 200 Sun Fire V440 and V240 SPARC-based servers running the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) to elementary, middle and high schools around the country. The systems will be pre-configured, rack-mounted and pre-tested under the Sun Customer Ready Systems program before shipment and supported by Sun following deployment. NEIS is an education information system established by Korea's Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development to improve teachers' working environment and increase efficiency of educational administration. Once it is completed, all educational institutions can share high quality of information, thus, all the schools can improve efficiency and reduce redundant processes. Mary Kay Mary Kay Incorporated, one of the largest direct sellers of quality skin care and color cosmetics of the world, selected Sun to protect its critical data such as customer information and sales histories. Specifically, the company chose an enterprise wide Sun StoreEdge L500 backup solution to provide a reliable secure system that could store data on a daily basis as well as protect data in the event of a natural disaster. Movilnet Telecomunicaciones Movilnet C.A. (CANTV Movilnet), the mobile company of CANTV (the #1 Communications Service Provider in Venzuela), has expanded its multi-layer service system. With the new capacity provided by Sun's V240 and V490 mid-range servers, CANTV Movilnet has positioned itself for continued growth while maintaining its current levels of customer service. The new servers were added to the Sun Preventive Services Program, that enable proactive services for mission critical platforms at CANTV. The deal, valued at US$900K, is made up of US$650K in servers and the balance in services. NHS Tayside As part of the United Kingdom's national healthcare service, NHS Tayside provides primary and secondary healthcare services to the more than 400,000 people who live in the Tayside region of Scotland. In partnership with other local and regional organizations, NHS Tayside also supports teaching facilities for the two universities located in Dundee. NHS Tayside has approximately 14,000 employees and a budget of nearly $1 billion (562 pounds sterling million). To increase performance while providing data protection for its burgeoning data volume, NHS Tayside has added a Sun StorEdge 6130 array with 4 TBs of scalable capacity to their Sun storage infrastructure to enable the healthcare provider to support its business-critical, data-intensive applications. Open Text Corporation Open Text Corporation, recognized as among the top 25% of the fastest growing software companies in the world by Software Magazine, recently made a commitment to proceed with an implementation of Sun Microsystems' Java System Identity Management software. Sun's Identity Management solution provides Open Text with audit capabilities for internal systems, but equally important, this solution helps Open Text work with its partners and customers to help meet their compliance needs. The Sun solution was the most deployable solution based on an agent-less architecture. As the leading independent provider of enterprise content management (ECM) software with 20 million users across more than 13,000 deployments in 114 countries, the maintenance and delivery of information is of vital importance to Open Text. With the Sun solution, the company is able to automate user provisioning, simplify password management and monitor access control. The seamless integration of Java System Identity Management with Open Text's numerous business solutions, combined with Sun services, ensures that Open Text will continue to provide secure and reliable enterprise content management. Paramount Paramount Pictures is using Sun's x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers (Sun Fire V20z and Sun Fire V40z), to render its new animated feature, Barnyard. Paramount will also use Sun's storage products-the Sun StorEdge 3510 and Sun StorEdge 3511-to manage its storage files. The artistic demands of the film required systems with the performance capabilities inherent in the Sun products. With Sun, Paramount is confident it can supply its artists with a high-quality render farm that will allow them to meet the production schedule and produce a graphically stunning CGI feature film. San Diego County Medical Society Foundation San Diego County Medical Society Foundation The San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS) Foundation selected the Sun Java Integration Suite -- the leading integration and composite application development platform and a component of Sun's Java Enterprise System offering -- to support its regional health information organization (RHIO) initiative, called the San Diego Medical Information Network Exchange (SD MINE) project. The Sun Java Integration Suite will enable SD MINE to intelligently cross-match patient data from disparate points of care into a single patient record that is accessible to all organizations within the RHIO. As a result, San Diego County residents will soon benefit from one of the most advanced regional healthcare networks in the nation. Stanford University One of the world's leading fundamental science research laboratories, Stanford University's Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), has chosen Sun Microsystems for its high performance computing solution. SLAC recently purchased 363 dual-core AMD Opteron processor-based Sun Fire V20z servers for its compute batch farm. BaBar, SLAC's high energy physics research exploring matter/anti-matter, will utilize these compute resources in the batch farm to enhance the speed and overall quality of research. T-Mobile International T-Mobile International chose Sun to power t-zones, its next-generation service delivery customer portal. Specifically, Sun is providing T-Mobile with software and hardware including the Solaris operating system, Sun Java System Identity Manager, Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition, Sun StorEdge storage systems and Sun Fire servers. The portal will improve the provisioning feeds used to store customer records and service definitions, and process purchases via the T-Mobile customer portal across Europe.
