Fujitsu and VERITAS to Collaborate on Mission-Critical Linux Solutions

Fujitsu Limited and VERITAS Software Corporation today announced plans to collaborate in offering mission-critical Linux system solutions. The companies plan to introduce Linux solutions optimizing market-leading storage management and backup products from VERITAS together with Fujitsu's world-class storage, server and middleware offerings. This will include the large-scale mission-critical Intel Architecture (IA) servers with 64-bit Linux that Fujitsu is readying for market introduction. Additionally, the companies plan to strengthen existing cooperation in sales, marketing and support activities, and Fujitsu plans to set up a competency center for testing and pre-verification of Fujitsu and VERITAS product combinations. The companies expect that their expanded collaboration will contribute to greater robustness and manageability of future Linux-based systems comprising Fujitsu and VERITAS products. Collaboration on Linux Solutions To optimize the performance and reliability of offerings combining Fujitsu and VERITAS products, the companies plan to coordinate respective product roadmaps, including those for Fujitsu's ETERNUS storage systems, PRIMERGY servers, and Systemwalker middleware, as well as VERITAS storage software products. Strengthening their longstanding partnership, the companies intend to collaborate on solutions that will provide customers with VERITAS’ robust backup, file system and volume management technology deployed on Fujitsu's planned large-scale mission-critical IA servers with mainframe-class performance and reliability. This will enable construction of highly reliable and high-performance server and storage systems for the Linux platform that provide greater manageability and reduced operating costs for customers. As part of this effort, Fujitsu plans to develop pre-verified platform integration (Pi) templates* for combinations of its ETERNUS storage systems, PRIMERGY IA servers, and Systemwalker middleware and VERITAS storage management and backup products. Sales, Marketing and Support Cooperation Complementing existing arrangements under which Fujitsu sells Solaris and Microsoft Windows versions of VERITAS software products, the two companies also agreed that Fujitsu will market and sell solutions based on VERITAS NetBackup for Linux and VERITAS Storage Foundation for Linux. In addition to providing support services for joint solutions based on VERITAS software, the companies plan to work together on joint sales and marketing activities. Establishment of Competency Center In order to provide solutions that its customers can use with confidence, Fujitsu - in cooperation with VERITAS - is planning to open by the end of the year a competency center to test various combinations of products from both companies and support construction of systems optimized to meet customers' requirements. The center will provide comprehensive support - from the proposal stage to deployment and after-sales support. "We are leveraging Fujitsu's accumulated competitive strengths in delivering highly scaleable and reliable mainframe systems to build new mission-critical systems based on open standard Linux that will provide customers with excellent reliability and flexibility," said Akira Yamanaka, Corporate Vice President and Group President of the Server Systems Group at Fujitsu Limited. "We are pleased to offer our customers technology from VERITAS to improve operational utilization and simplify the management of these systems." "VERITAS provides customers with storage management software solutions that will operate across multiple platforms," said Hiroyuki Kimura, President of VERITAS Software K.K. "The combination of Fujitsu's capability in hardware and services for mission-critical customers, with leading Linux products from VERITAS, will enable construction of high performance and highly reliable storage and server systems." *Pi Templates: Pre-verified high-quality system patterns covering the full system lifecycle and confirming matters such as reliability and scalability, security, operability, and ease of maintenance.
