MySQL Supports Linux on IBM eServer Linux on Power5 Systems

MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that the MySQL database supports Linux on IBM POWER processors across all IBM eServer platforms, including p5 (pSeries), i5 (iSeries) and JS20 BladeCenter systems. The combination of MySQL, Linux and the IBM 64-bit Power architecture extends the benefits of open source computing on IBM hardware to the database, providing customers a low-cost, scalable solution for powering large, enterprise-class applications. MySQL also announced today that it has joined the IBM PartnerWorld program and is now an IBM Business Partner, allowing the company to leverage IBM support in helping extend MySQL to a broader range of markets and customers. "IBM is a mainstay for most large enterprises, a market where MySQL adoption is growing rapidly," noted Zack Urlocker, vice president of marketing at MySQL AB. "MySQL on the IBM POWER processor supports enterprise applications with the high performance and lower total cost of ownership that businesses need to stay competitive. Our status as an IBM Business Partner will help us expand our market reach at a time when businesses are increasingly embracing open source software." The IBM Power5 architecture is a leading industry technology for 64-bit applications. It offers customers open, innovative technology solutions using multi-Linux distributions, including SUSE LINUX Enterprise and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. IBM Power5 architecture features logical partitioning to support multiple operating systems on the same machine, a shared 32- and 64-bit environment, and the enterprise features of POWER hardware. Through the Linux on POWER Test Drive program, IBM has provided support and testing to ensure a smooth MySQL port to the Linux on POWER platform. Continued MySQL's Urlocker, "The IBM Test Drive staff got us up and running immediately, and their responsive team helped us complete everything including testing within a couple of days. This was one of the fastest, easiest ports we've done." Support for IBM's POWER architecture adds to the wide range of platforms MySQL supports, including IBM eServer, xSeries and zSeries, most popular 32- and 64-bit processors, as well as all major Linux distributions, Windows, AIX(R) and other Unix operating systems.
