Mercury Computer Systems Ships Multicomputers for Canadian Air Force

Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. today announced it shipped RACE++® systems to Telephonics Corporation of Farmingdale, New York, for the Canadian Air Force's CP-140 Aurora Incremental Modernization Program. Mercury's multicomputers will be installed in the advanced APS-143B(V)3-MPA OceanEye(TM) Surveillance Radar on the CP-140 Aurora. The initial order is valued at approximately $1.7 million. The total contract value, including the initial order, is expected to exceed $5 million over the next several years. "We are pleased to support the Aurora upgrade program with our rugged commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) multicomputers," said Barry Isenstein, vice president and general manager, Defense Electronics Group, Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. "These cost-effective, high-performance systems provide the processing power needed to increase the range and performance of the inverse synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for the CP-140 Aurora program." "Mercury's RACE++ computers are at the heart of the radar, providing the high-end computing and bandwidth necessary for this new system," said Richard Frazita, vice president, Program Management at Telephonics Corporation. "We look forward to working with Mercury to deliver and support a radar system that will meet the needs of our Prime Contractor, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates LTD, and the Canadian Air Force." The Aurora is a long-range patrol aircraft able to fly more than 9,000 km/5,000nm without refueling and is Canada's strategic airborne land and sea surveillance aircraft. The upgraded imaging radar will enable the Canadian Air Force to detect, classify and track targets or objects at sea; detect and image land targets; and provide ground mapping. The Aurora aircraft is used by the Air Force in missions such as search and rescue, sovereignty, and counter- drug patrols. The system will work over the ground, littoral (shallow) and blue water.
