UCAR - Peak Weather Resources Systems Administrator II (Data Center Manager)
Division/Program: Peak Weather Services [Job #4204, at Center Green] This is a new full-time position. Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to Friday, August 27, 2004. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis. Basic Job Function: The candidate will be responsible for configuring, managing, and maintaining a 24/7 computer and data operations center, and will also supervise technicians, vendors, and subcontractors. He or she will have an IT and software development background that includes configuration and administration of Intel-based servers with Linux, RAID systems, Internet connectivity, and writing systems level scripts. Preference will be given to candidates who have a working knowledge of meteorological forecast systems, NOAA Port receiver systems, and national- and mesoscale numerical weather prediction models. Additional information: Peak Weather Resources will become an independent entity, separate from UCAR, on October 1, 2004. When this occurs, this position will no longer be under the auspices of UCAR. Duties Include: Monitors Peak's operational systems regularly, and takes corrective action in the event of system anomalies. If necessary, contacts Peak's clientele to keep them current on the status of problems, and also notifies them prior to known and scheduled system outages. Improves monitoring and problem notification subsystems to enable timely feedback on problems. Also improves monitor to automate system corrective actions to the greatest extent possible, e.g., automated process restarts. Helps to transition new capabilities developed at NCAR to Peak's Data Center. Contributes systems administration and software expertise to proposals for new Peak opportunities, and researches latest high-availability software and hardware technologies. Requirements Include: Education and Experience: B.S. degree in systems administration, computer science, engineering, meteorology, or mathematics; and At least 6 years' experience in maintaining operational computer and data systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated skill in Unix systems administration and maintaining operational systems. Demonstrated knowledge in monitoring systems with real-time data flows. Demonstrated skill in programming in Perl or other scripting languages compatible with Unix. Demonstrated skill in working with databases. Demonstrated skill in programming in languages such as C, C++, or Java. Demonstrated skill in working effectively with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, managers, and project clients. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and ideas via journal articles, technical reports and presentation.
