Glenn Edens to Lead Sun Microsystems Laboratories
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) , today announced that Glenn Edens has been appointed Vice President and Director of Sun Microsystems Laboratories. Glenn joins a prestigious roster of colleagues who continue to make Sun Labs a leader in driving innovative breakthroughs for Sun and its customers. Glenn will report to Greg Papadopoulos, EVP, CTO, Sun Microsystems, Inc., and will manage research and development at all three Sun Labs locations: Mountain View, CA, Burlington, MA and Grenoble, France. "Glenn has the perfect blend of skills and experience to lead Sun Labs. He has worked as an individual researcher, managed research projects, been in charge of strategy for some big companies, founded a number of startups, and worked as a consultant," says Sun CTO Greg Papadopoulos. "Glenn's experience in telecommunications and media gives him an excellent customer perspective. That is, he has been on both the technology creation and application end. These days, you need a combination of technical savvy and business acumen to be successful in research." Glenn joins Sun from Hewlett-Packard where he served as vice president, Strategic Technology. Prior to that he was president of AT&T Strategic Ventures (1998-2001), also serving as VP of Broadband Technology for AT&T Laboratories. From 1992-1998, Glenn was at Interval Research Corporation in Palo Alto, managing research and the transfer of research results into external product companies. "Sun is the last independent computer company and Sun's complete independence was very appealing to me," says Glenn Edens. "While Sun faces some tough challenges, companies with tough challenges are a heck of a lot more interesting to be in than companies where everything is going swimmingly. The issues of what can Sun do to differentiate itself, to keep customer mind share, to solve complex computing problems -- that's interesting." Glenn assumes the role from Jim Mitchell, Sun Fellow and Sun Vice President, who was recently appointed Vice President and Director of Sun's HPCS Research and Development Program.
