SANTA CLARA, CA -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) was today announced by Telstra Corporation Ltd of Australia as the lead provider of technology solutions and services for Telstra's new technology environment. This will lower costs for developer communities and businesses around the world while enabling them to quickly bring to market compelling online applications, such as unified messaging and convenient payment solutions on Telstra's networks. "The new technology environment will effectively open our networks and platforms to the IT industry for the development and hosting of the customer applications of the future," said Dr. Ziggy Switkowski, chief executive officer, Telstra. "Together with Sun, we can fast track the development of compelling customer applications and services, driving the take up of wireless and broadband in the markets we serve. We expect this to be a tremendous boost to technology innovation in Australia." Telstra is one of the world's first telecommunications companies to pursue a truly open services platform and environment that enables applications, services and content to be delivered transparently across wireline, wireless and broadband networks, on any device. "Telstra continues to unleash the possibilities of an open Net for consumers and businesses to the benefit of country and economy," said Scott McNealy, chairman and chief executive officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Together we will provide an open environment on which conceivably any business can deliver services, content and applications to users at anytime, anyplace and on any device. This represents a landmark in the evolution of service provider networks." Sun(TM) systems, the Sun Open Net Environment (ONE) architecture and open Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) have been chosen as the foundation of the next-generation Standard Operating Environment (SOE) for Telstra's next-generation open services platform (OSP) platform in Australia. Combined they will provide an open, integratable platform for highly scalable, robust and futureproof web services that will help to protect current and future investments, speed to market rich new services, and help increase revenue opportunities. Telstra will also take advantage of Sun's comprehensive portfolio of consulting, training and support services. "We're very excited to be working with Telstra, one of the most successful and advanced service providers in the world," McNealy added. "With their broad reach across Asia and a rich portfolio of services, we will be able to offer an abundance of opportunities to our developer community and iForce partners to innovate." Numbered in the millions, Sun Microsystems developer and iForce partner community is a powerful force for the creation of new applications and solutions on technologies such as Sun ONE, Solaris(TM) Operating Environment and Java platform. Telstra and Sun plan to utilise and expand Sun's iForce Centre in Sydney to provide an environment for the development and testing of solutions for Telstra, the Java developer community and its third-party partners.
