MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- SGI (NYSE: SGI) today announced support for the Intel® Itanium® 2 processor as a part of the company's high-performance computing server family. SGI has the “world's most scalable shared-memory system architecture,” which is designed to meet the particular needs of technical users. With this announcement, the company plans to extend its unique system architecture to support Itanium 2 processor-based systems running a high-performance Linux® operating system implementation. "With its unique system design expertise, SGI is bringing high- performance, scalable systems based on the Itanium 2 processor to high-end technical application users," said Richard Dracott, group marketing director, Enterprise Platforms Group, Intel. "SGI helps engineering, scientific and creative customers solve the world's most complex computational problems. These customers want the highest performing platform, whether it is an Intel Itanium-based computing platform running Linux or our established MIPS high-performance modular computing server line," said Paul McNamara, vice president, Products and Platforms, SGI. "Our strategy is to offer customers a choice of powerful, highly differentiated solutions with the performance and scalability users have come to expect from SGI." SGI Itanium-based systems will enable maximum performance for a breadth of professional applications that require high throughput in a Linux operating environment. Specific products based on the Intel Itanium 2 processor will be announced at future dates.
