Fujitsu Powers NMMCC Tier-1 Data Center with PRIMEPOWER Servers

SUNNYVALE, CA -- Fujitsu Technology Solutions, Inc., a member of the worldwide Fujitsu(R) companies, has been chosen by New Mexico Mutual Casualty Company (NMMCC) to provide PRIMEPOWER(TM) SPARC(R) compliant, Solaris(TM) compatible servers for its tier-one data center. PRIMEPOWER now supplies a reliable solution to data center requirements that previous vendors could not address. NMMCC had been using servers from other UNIX(R) vendors in their tier-1 data center, but the company was suffering from major failures in front-line systems. Upon vendor recommendation, NMMCC upgraded to new releases of the operating system but were unsuccessful in solving reliability issues. Then another brand of UNIX servers from a different vendor was tried and again failed. "It was miserable," said Peter Baston, product development analyst for NMMCC/Foundation Reserve. "Our primary tier-one servers were now questionable." Looking for some relief, NMMCC installed a PRIMEPOWER server with Oracle(R) Cluster Software and quickly realized it was able to process more data than with their other UNIX servers. The PRIMEPOWER server was handling four processes for every one that other vendors' boxes were handling. The result was an environment that could meet the demands of a multi-state expansion project where information has to flow efficiently and reliably to requesting agents. With PRIMEPOWER servers installed, NMMCC has seen significant reduction in server downtime and in operating cost. In addition, the method of upgrading has been an extra bonus. Baston points out, "PRIMEPOWER boxes can be upgraded by merely inserting new processors, and not by having to go through forklift upgrades to replace the entire box, as our other two UNIX vendors required. That means our ROI just got a boost of 400 percent. PRIMEPOWER also has better design and better software resulting in better operational efficiency." "With PRIMEPOWER servers, we try to eliminate the risk and cost of inconsistency for our customers," said Richard McCormack, vice president of Fujitsu Technology Solutions. "Our customers tell us repeatedly that if the system stops the income stops -- that's the way we look at it too. With PRIMEPOWER servers, availability will not be compromised." NMMCC's budget for IT upgrades with other UNIX vendors would have been $1.75 million in the next year. "With PRIMEPOWER, this number will be reduced to $1.2 million," said Baston. "Our servers will run for the next four years. This affects our TCO in a big way and gives PRIMEPOWER servers an edge over other vendors." New Mexico Mutual Casualty Company is expecting to continue its relationship with Fujitsu. Baston stated: "Based on the success of our current PRIMEPOWER servers, [NMMCC] has no doubts that it will continue to depend on Fujitsu for its UNIX and Solaris server needs in the future." Easy installation was another plus. Baston points out, "This has been the fastest successful introduction of any piece of hardware or software in our company."
