Operating systems specialist

The Operating Systems Specialist at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) assists in overseeing the day-to-day computing needs of TACC staff, including overseeing proper operation of staff desktop systems, IT server infrastructure and staff network. The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The primary responsibilities of this position at TACC are the following:
  • Maintain Microsoft Windows XP, Redhat Linux, and Mac OS X desktop clients;
  • Maintain Windows 2003 Server and Redhat Linux servers;
  • Maintain a variety of server based services including IIS, Apache, TRAC, CVS, Subversion, SMS, WDS, WSUS;
  • Troubleshoot server and client computing issues in a heterogeneous (mixed) computing environment as they arise; and
  • Aid in the planning, implementation and maintenance of networking & computing infrastructure (network routing, firewall design & placement, planning & implementing server security & providing, implementing & testing disaster recovery plans).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS The selected candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of programming experience, of which one year is in operating systems programming or high school graduation or GED, and seven years of programming experience, of which one year is in operating systems programming;
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Windows XP, Redhat Linux, and Apple Mac OS X operating systems operating in a Microsoft domain environment;
  • Experience with VMWARE and Parallels;
  • Experience maintaining a Windows 2003 Server Active Directory infrastructure; this includes knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy, Security best practices, Printing, Windows Services Update Service (WSUS), SMS, WDS;
  • Background in maintaining IIS and Apache web servers;
  • Basic networking knowledge such as routing, subnetting, switch management;
  • Excellent documentation, interpersonal and communication skills; and
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS One or more of the following qualifications are strongly desired: Knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Kerberos, LDAP, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Firewall management using Shorewall, IPTables, or PIX, Microsoft Services for UNIX 3.5 or UNIX support built into Windows Server 2003 R2.
