EMC Corp., the world leader in information storage and management, posted strong growth and increased its market share to emerge as the No. 1 vendor for external storage in India in 2004, according to IDC's Disk Storage Tracker 2004. EMC's market share in the external disk storage market increased from 6.7% in 2003 to 24.5% in 2004, in revenue terms. On a worldwide basis, EMC was No. 1 in the external disk storage systems revenue with 21.1% share, growing revenue about four times faster than the total market and recapturing the top spot for the full year from Hewlett-Packard, which became the revenue leader in 2002 when it acquired Compaq. According to the IDC report, EMC was the fastest growing storage vendor in India in 2004, registering a revenue growth 11 times faster than the total market. The total market for external storage grew by 34.5% to US$117mn in 2004 while EMC grew its revenues from US$5.8mn in 2003 to US$28.7mn in 2004, registering a growth of 395%. The IDC Disk Storage Tracker tracks the total external storage market in India and does not track revenue and volumes from software and switch sales. Commenting on the occasion, Manoj Chugh, Country Manager, EMC India & SAARC, said, "India is a key strategic market for EMC. Right from our inception here we have aggressively focused on expanding the market for information management solutions and have emerged among the top three players in the country." "Going forward our endeavor will be to sustain and fortify our No. 1 position in India by stepping up the momentum on expanding our presence across the country and growing the channel partner network and the senior management team," he added. EMC recently increased its investment in India bringing the total investment to US$250mn by 2007, marking the second phase of growth and expansion in the country. It also recently inaugurated its India Software Development and Support Centre in Bangalore. On a worldwide basis, EMC was the No. 1 provider of storage software for the fifth consecutive year in 2004, according to a report released by IDC. EMC extended its worldwide storage software lead last year to 30.9% revenue share, growing revenue faster than the next four closest competitors.
