There will be a panel discussion on Production Security and Security Incidents at UIUC at 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7 in Room 2405 Siebel Center for Computer Science. NCSA senior security engineer Jim Barlow will be one of the featured panelists. NCSA is co-sponsoring the seminar in collaboration with the University as part of our involvement in the National Middleware Initiative (NMI) and the National Center for Advanced Secure Systems Research (NCASSR). The number of security incidents has risen in the past few years, leading to major changes in computer security at the University. This panel will provide a perspective on the major issues facing large campus computer services and networks. Among the questions to be explored are: What are the threats and major vulnerabilities of systems on campus? How can privacy and security be balanced in a campus environment? What tools and techniques have been successful? What security and privacy tools are badly needed? What does the future look like? In addition to Barlow, the other panelists are Mike Corn, security director of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES); Charlie Kline, Campus Network Architect; and Christine Gressley, manager of system services at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.
