Ferrari Selects APC's InfraStruXure Architecture

American Power Conversion (APC), one of the world's largest providers of equipment that serves the network-critical physical infrastructure (NCPI), today announced that Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, the Formula One racing team, recently selected APC's InfraStruXure with integrated cooling for Ferrari's new data center in Maranello, Italy. Capable of cooling 20kW (kilowatts) per rack, InfraStruXure with integrated cooling will serve as the physical infrastructure for Ferrari's hardware platform that performs the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations essential to the aerodynamic modeling of its championship-winning Formula One cars. APC's InfraStruXure provides an "on-demand" architecture for power, cooling, management and services in a rack-optimized design, scalable in server capacity. This scalability takes much of the guesswork, over planning, delays and risk out of installing critical applications, and is optimized for today's high-density computing installations. The integrated cooling system consists of APC's NetworkAir In-Row air conditioner and a Hot Aisle Containment System. The InfraStruXure system improves availability by placing the cooling system within the IT row and is designed specifically to address high density IT technologies such as power- dense servers. In addition, InfraStruXure provides a lower total cost of ownership and enhanced data center adaptability. The InfraStruXure is part of Ferrari's turn-key solution that includes managing the data room construction as well. Ferrari implemented a large supercomputer using AMD Opteron-based Linux server clusters for CFD simulations and the related storage system. With each installed rack generating 10kW of heat load, APC's InfraStruXure with integrated cooling proved to be one of the only solutions capable of meeting Ferrari's requirements. At up to 20kW per rack, InfraStruXure with integrated cooling provides up to ten times the cooling potential of traditional cooling approaches, which range from 2-3kW per rack.
