Battery Ventures Leads $7 Million Round in Orion Multisystems

Battery Ventures, a leading venture capital firm focused on investing in technology companies at all stages of growth, today announced that it has completed a $6 million investment in Orion Multisystems, Inc., a Silicon Valley company founded by computer industry veterans which has developed the highest performance, general-purpose computing platform that can be powered by a standard wall outlet. The $7 million Series B round was Orion's first institutional round of financing and will be used by the company to execute its business objectives with a focus on the development, commercialization and deployment of its flagship product, the Orion Cluster Workstation. In conjunction with the funding, Battery also announced today that Ollie Curme, a general partner with the firm, has joined Orion's Board of Directors. The Orion Cluster Workstation brings unparalleled performance into the hands of engineering, scientific, financial and creative professionals who need to solve computationally complex problems. An Orion system is designed from the ground up as a single computer built for individual users. Twelve compute nodes share a single circuit board for the desktop system, while the deskside system can scale up to 96-nodes using eight interconnected boards. The entire system boots with the push of a button and has the look, feel and ease-of-use of a traditional workstation running a standard Linux operating system. No assembly or systems integration is needed and minimal configuration is required to immediately run clustered applications. "The cluster community has grown dramatically despite the headaches associated with cobbling clusters together," said Ollie Curme, general partner, Battery Ventures. "Orion has packaged the power of a large cluster into the form factor, price, and ease of use of a small PC. We believe this breakthrough will truly change the high performance computing landscape, by freeing scientists and engineers from the cost and complexity of maintaining large clusters." "I am excited about Orion's future and pleased that Battery will be working with us as we deliver on our vision for aggressively growing the company," said Colin Hunter, president and chief executive officer, Orion Multisystems. "The demand for our Cluster workstations has been high and we look forward to working with customers to help them improve productivity and performance through a new generation of high performance computing solutions."
