Egenera Inc. Names Miller CEO and Thompson COO

MARLBORO, MA -- Egenera, Inc., a leader in next-generation data center infrastructure, today announced that Debbie Miller has joined the Company as president and chief executive officer, and a member of the board of directors, effective immediately. Vern Brownell, founder and current CEO of Egenera, will become the Company's chief technology officer and chairman of the board. The firm also announced that Mike Thompson has joined the Company as its chief operating officer with responsibility for sales, business development, field marketing, customer service and professional services. "In just two years, the Egenera team has built a thriving company and a breakthrough technology that are already making a difference in the most demanding data center environments. As the first supplier to deliver next-generation computing, Egenera is enabling customers to lower total cost of ownership while simultaneously improving the performance, availability and manageability of their mission-critical applications," said Brownell. "Going forward, Debbie's extensive operational and general management experience firmly positions Egenera to capitalize on a tremendous opportunity and become the next great technology company." As CTO, Brownell will continue to manage Egenera's hardware, manufacturing and software-engineering functions while increasing his focus on long-range product planning and customer interaction. Brownell's first-hand knowledge of the challenges facing enterprise data centers, garnered during his tenure as the former chief technology officer at Goldman Sachs, makes him uniquely qualified to guide Egenera's research and development initiatives. Miller's experience in high technology spans three decades, including roles at the world's largest computer companies and several startups. During 17 years at IBM, she became general manager of a $3.1 billion business line and launched the AS/400, one of the most successful products in IBM history. From 1989 to 1993, Miller held VP-level sales and marketing posts at Silicon Graphics, where she built the company's channel business and helped drive SGI revenues from $100 million to $1.5 billion in four years. Miller also served as a vice president and general manager at Digital Equipment, regularly exceeding revenue targets on a base of $2.1 billion while improving customer satisfaction by 20 percent. More recently, Miller has been applying her considerable talents to helping startups achieve success. For example, she was president and chief operating officer at 2Bridge Software and served as chief executive officer at Covia, where she ramped quarterly revenues more than ten-fold in just over a year. Miller earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science and Asian studies from Wittenberg University. She serves on the boards of Wittenberg and Sentinel Group Funds, Inc. "Egenera has what it takes to be a billion-dollar company," Miller said. "Vern and his team have achieved what few startups, or incumbents for that matter, even attempt. They tackled a big, difficult problem--the ineffectiveness and inefficiency of legacy computing--and developed a revolutionary solution purpose-built to satisfy the most demanding enterprise customers. Moreover, execution of the product roadmap and business plan has been flawless, another important indicator of the Company's long-term viability. "As we enter the next phase of Egenera's evolution into the world's leading supplier of enterprise computing solutions, we are determined to win. We will deliver a level of product and service excellence that delights customers and earns their business. We will maintain a technology lead that rewards our investors and gives our users a powerful competitive advantage. And we will get there as a team that works hard, plays hard and constantly strives to do even better. I am thrilled by the opportunity to work with Vern and all of Egenera's dedicated employees to take this uniquely promising organization to the next level." Thompson brings a rich background of domestic and international operations experience to Egenera. Prior to joining the Company, he was senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Stratus Technologies, where he also served on the board of directors. During his Stratus tenure, Thompson managed a 400-person operation generating more than $700 million in annual revenues through direct and indirect channels. Under his guidance, Stratus launched its first Wintel-based product, penetrating new markets and garnering 90 new accounts and 60 new resellers in six months. Prior to Stratus, Thompson served as director of U.S. sales operations for the financial line of business at Tandem Computers, directing sales and support to the nation's top 120 finance accounts. Earlier, at Burroughs Corporation, he focused on driving sales to the Fortune 50. Thompson holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Southern Connecticut University. "Egenera has developed breakthrough technology purpose-built to solve customer pain points and dramatically reduce the cost of computing in the world's major data centers, which equates to exceptional market opportunity," said Thompson. "Already, enterprise customers are quantifying the cost and performance advantages of the BladeFrame(TM) system and praising our high-touch service model. In a remarkably short timeframe, the Egenera team has made a meaningful impact on the market for high-end computing. I am very enthusiastic about the opportunity to help Egenera continue winning business from legacy suppliers and achieve its destiny as a world-class technology company."
