Caldera Announces Agreement with eLinux, Launches Volution Online

OREM, UT -- Caldera International, Inc. (Nasdaq:CALD), today announced the launch of Volution Online, an Internet delivered, proactive software management service for Linux and UNIX systems. Simultaneously, Caldera and eLinux, a wholly owned subsidiary of PC Mall (Nasdaq:MALL), announced an agreement under which eLinux will pre-load and ship Volution Online with Linux server systems. The service will be branded by eLinux as eLinux Software Management (ESM). Volution Online saves system administrators time by monitoring the software assets running on single systems and networks of Linux servers and proactively delivers support alerts based on the information the user needs, including: security alerts, software updates and bug fixes. In addition, Volution Online provides advanced decision tools for an administrator to preview the impact of software updates and new installations by simulating a virtual installation. By subscribing to Volution Online, MIS managers and Linux system administrators can take advantage of the Internet for the delivery of software updates and software management services. This reduces the time Linux administrators and users spend searching, evaluating and implementing software patches, updates and security alerts. Other advantages include an understanding of the costs and benefits of software upgrades before installation; and administrators can stay ahead of security problems with e-mail and console alerts. Finally, administrators can manage their Linux software from any Web-enabled desktop through the Volution Web console. "Caldera continues to innovate and to bring Internet delivered services to our customers, in partnership with our reseller community," said Reg Broughton, senior vice president and general manager for Caldera International, Inc. "Volution Online is one of the wide range of Web-based services that Caldera offers." The combination of Volution Online software along with hardware from eLinux will be sold under the name eLinux Software Management (ESM). ESM will be offered and preinstalled on all eLinux Openserve servers and will be available as a trial subscription or an option on custom configured Compaq (NYSE:CPQ), IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HP) servers. Administrators of these systems will be able to access information about new software and alerts from the eLinux Web site www.elinux.com. "We recognize that online open source management tools significantly reduce the time required to analyze and implement software changes," said Brian Naylor, general manager of eLinux.
