Number of AMD Opteron Processor-Based Systems Increases from 81 to 113 on Latest TOP500 Supercomputing List: AMD gained ground on the new World’s Top 500, as its larger rival, Intel, lost ground. AMD, a processing powerhouse in the supercomputing market, now powers even more of the world's fastest and highest-performing computer systems, according to the latest figures made available by the TOP500 Organization. Nearly one quarter of the top 500 supercomputers in the world are based on AMD Opeteron processors, leveraging the advanced technology of AMD Direct Connect Architecture and HyperTransport, AMD Opteron is able to provide superior performance and scalability to meet the ever-increasing demands of the high-compute HPC market. Through collaboration with key high-performance computing OEMs such as Cray and Sun Microsystems, AMD Opteron is credited with supporting three of the top 10 systems on the TOP500 list.
