SAIC: Mass Storage Lead
Location: Greenbelt, Maryland, Requisition Number: 88766: This position is contingent upon the award of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) contract to the SSES Business Unit of SAIC. NASA is conducting a Millennia contract task order competition for the operation of the NASA Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at GSFC in Greenbelt, Maryland. JOB DUTIES: Oversees and coordinates support for the management, maintenance, and future planning and development of NCCS’s data storage systems and distributed file systems. Assesses and develops storage hardware and software as well as evaluates and integrates new storage technologies. Assesses issues and develops resolutions to meet productivity, quality, and client-satisfaction goals and objectives. Develops mechanisms and action plans for monitoring progress, quality control, intervention, and problem solving. Monitors projects to ensure scope of work, schedule, and budget are well defined and maintained. Supports documentation of system architecture and design, acquisition of mass storage subsystems, subsystem performance validation/evaluation, subsystem acceptance testing, subsystem migration support, and subsystem tuning/optimization. Relevant experience must demonstrate that the candidate has the project leadership, technical abilities, and expertise in mass storage subsystems necessary for building and sustaining NCCS performance. Substantial systems programming experience with high performance computers and storage subsystems is required as well as demonstrated experience managing large systems, integrating hardware into large production systems, working to identify and solve problems, and knowledge of system components. Essential job functions include: • Maintaining and enhancing sound, positive customer relations through frequent communication, applying a comprehensive understanding of customer needs, application of sound analyses, application of industry best practices, and outstanding communications (verbal and written). • Monitoring and controlling project budgets and supporting earned value reporting • Managing staff and allocation of resources. • Focusing on critical work initiatives and routine coordination of key activities, milestones, and deliverables to ensure results are achieved. • Interacting routinely with key customers and clients in order to address and resolve complex challenges. • Offering flexibility and broad responsiveness, including participation in customer and corporate strategic and tactical program management and planning efforts. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years related experience in supercomputing/high performance computing programs with four years experience in a mass storage subsystem leadership capacity for a high performance computing environment. Requires ability to manage highly technical employees performing complex assignments in a high-performance computing/data intensive environment. Requires extensive and frequent use of creative and applicable practices, procedures, and policies and an ability and willingness to perform in critical deadline situations. Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Ability to work in a high demand/volume work environment with changing priorities. Experience working with and interfacing with HPC mass storage vendors is a requirement. Position requires the ability to manage employees; includes hiring, development, and retention. Individual will be responsible for identifying personnel requirements and allocating personnel among multiple projects. The ideal candidate must have very strong organizational and time-management skills. This position requires the ability to monitor multiple short- and long-term tasks with various overlapping schedules while communicating with multiple customers. Position requires strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interface with all levels of employees in the organization to include customer one-on-one interaction. Individual must have excellent communication and presentation skills as well as experience presenting to a group setting. DESIRED SKILLS: Experience with project management or functional management of work contained within technical or scientific environments is desired. Project Management Institute’s Project Management Professional (PMP) certification desired. EDUCATION: A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, information technology, or in a related engineering discipline is required.
