Acumem introduces support for New Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processors
Acumem, a provider of intelligent performance optimization software for single- and multi-core environments today announces that it now has full support for AMD’s new quad-core AMD Opteron processors in its Acumem ThreadSpotter and Acumem SlowSpotter performance optimization tools.
Acumem patented technology allows programmers of multi-core or multi-threaded systems to fully utilize the performance of their system in a very simple and user-friendly way. “Collaborating with AMD is a natural step, as AMD is a leader in the multicore area” says Mats Hovmoller, CEO Acumem. “Optimal application performance is a combination of great hardware and software, and Acumem and AMD provide this combination” he adds.
The performance impact of moving applications to new multicore architectures is significant and can be further enhanced by adapting the application code to the specific features of the multicore architecture in a way standard compilers cannot. Acumem ThreadSpotter analyzes application bottle necks such as multi-threaded interaction, memory bandwidth and cache utilization based on the specifics of a certain processor. The resulting analysis is presented as clear advice to programmers on what to optimize and how to do it, increasing both performance of the application and productivity of the programmer.
As an example of the joint impact, Acumem first ran the widely used open source application Lib quantum on the Quad-Core AMD Opteron “Barcelona” processor. The next step was to optimize and run on the new 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron “Shanghai” processor. The combination of Acumem ThreadSpotter and the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor provided a throughput improvement of more than a factor 3, providing evidence that the combination of these technologies provides significant improvements in application performance.
