Successful Field Trials Confirm Accelerated Seismic Migration Processing: Acceleware today announced the launch of its seismic data acceleration solution that provides a multi-fold performance increase to reduce lengthy processing times and deliver faster results to make drilling decisions for the oil and gas industry. The Acceleware software solution harnesses the massively parallel processing capabilities of GPU accelerators to dramatically increase the efficiency of data centers and reduce total cost of IT ownership. This technique is designed for 2D and 3D land and marine data where a typical processing job can compute from several days to months and solves a major bottleneck in the seismic processing industry today. “Acceleware is growing its presence in the high performance computing sector, in part, by expanding into new industry verticals,” said Sean Krakiwsky, CEO of Acceleware. “Expansion into the seismic data processing vertical is evidence of Acceleware’s commitment to continued growth, and the execution of our long-term strategy to become a dominant provider of multi-core software solutions.” Migration is the most common seismic data processing method used to recover subsurface images of the earth’s interior using surface-recorded data volumes obtained from seismic reflection surveys. The Acceleware solution directly speeds up the Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Time Migration method as the most expensive component of seismic data processing. By accelerating the computation within this method Acceleware uncovers the potential for increased resolution, faster turn-around and better quality confidence while handling larger datasets of increasing complexity. “In the never ending search for the best price/performance product in the computer world Acceleware stands out,” said Rick Steele, President of P-Wave Imaging Ltd. “Their GPU based acceleration solution allows you to find the answer quicker by significantly increasing your compute power while keeping the cost of power and cooling in check.” By accelerating the computations involved in seismic migration Acceleware uncovers the benefits of more dense packaging and improved economics in power and cooling. This is the first commercially available application that brings GPU based acceleration to this market that is of great interest to academic and industrial research centers. The solution was installed and field tested with a number of commercial data processing vendors on a variety of land and marine surveys. "Since the launch of our HPC Accelerator program, HP has seen substantial interest from our customers in acceleration technology," said Ed Turkel, manager of product and technology marketing, High-Performance Computing Division, HP. "We are very pleased that Acceleware is helping oil and gas customers on HP platforms meet their strong demand for seismic analysis in oil exploration." Acceleware will be hosting a seismic market launch event today in Calgary, AB. For further information or to register for this event, please visit its Web site.
