The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering was awarded the 2005 ABET Presidential Award for Diversity for attracting and graduating minority students. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), based in Washington, D.C., is the leading professional accreditation agency providing leadership and quality assurance in applied science, computing, engineering and technology education. "ABET is pleased to recognize the UTSA College of Engineering for their unparalleled success in attracting, retaining, and graduating Hispanic men and women from their engineering programs," said Richard Anderson, ABET President. In the 2002-2003 Academic Year, the UTSA College of Engineering conferred 160 bachelor's degrees in engineering and nearly half were awarded to minority students. Fifty-eight degrees, or 36 percent, of the overall total were awarded to Hispanic students. Earlier this year, Black Issues in Higher Education magazine also ranked UTSA among the Top 50 for the number of minority students earning undergraduate degrees in 2003-2004. "We are honored to receive this award and will continue to work with the university to reach out to women and minorities and provide them with excellent educational opportunities," said Mauli Agrawal, Interim Dean of the UTSA College of Engineering. "It's great to see our efforts recognized nationally as we look to serve as a role model for other institutions." Over the last four years, the UTSA College of Engineering enrollment has increased by 75 percent with 1,800 students currently enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Celebrating its 36th anniversary, UTSA serves more than 27,300 students enrolled in 62 bachelor's, 43 master's and 16 doctoral degree programs.
