SANTA CLARA, CA -- Alcatel has selected Intel® Media Switch silicon as the switching engine in the upcoming Alcatel OmniSwitch stackable product line. Alcatel will integrate the Intel® Media Switch IXE2424 10/100+Gigabit device, a Layer 2/3/4 switch/router device that enables equipment manufacturers to design systems that support high-bandwidth voice, video and data applications at wire speed. "The Intel Media Switch Device complements our traditional ASIC-based switching solutions," said John Bailey, Alcatel senior vice president of product development. "The Media Switch enables us to bring low-cost, highly functional switching products to market more quickly by coupling it with Alcatel's Operating System, which by design we have made portable to multiple hardware platforms." "Alcatel's selection of the Intel Media Switch enables it to deliver cost-effective, high-performance, and highly scalable stackable solutions to meet the current and future switching requirements of their customers," said Joe Jensen, general manager of Intel's Embedded Intel Architecture Division. The Intel IXE2424 device is equipped with four Gigabit Ethernet ports and 24 10/100 ports. It also supports advanced traffic prioritization, MPLS tagging, Diffserv, WRED, QoS, Layer 2/3/4 switching/routing, and bandwidth management capabilities, offered at a comparable price to less feature-rich products. Alcatel will also include in its switches the Intel® LXT9785 10/100 8-port transceiver, which simplifies multiport switch design through its low power and multiple interfaces.
