PORTLAND, OR -- The Portland Group division of STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) today announced an alliance with Linux NetworX, a provider of powerful and easy-to-manage cluster computing solutions, to offer the PGI® CDK™ Cluster Development Kit ™ package, as part of an integrated turn-key clustering solution. The PGI CDK toolset consists of parallel compilers, debugger, profiler, tools and utilities that simplify setup, management and application development for Linux cluster systems while maximizing cluster performance. The CDK software enables users migrating from RISC/UNIX workstations to efficiently deploy their application development process to scalable Linux clusters, with a level of efficiency previously not available. Linux is rapidly gaining market share in mission-critical, enterprise applications, fueled by a worldwide community of developers and a new generation of Linux clustering tools such as the PGI CDK and the Linux NetworX ClusterWorX® system management software. "Linux NetworX provides our customers with turn-key Linux clustering solutions, which often include The Portland Group's enabling PGI CDK Cluster Development Kit," said Clark Roundy, vice president for Linux NetworX. "The high demand we're seeing for The Portland Group's efficient and high performance tools demonstrate the fast rate in which the market is moving to the Linux clustering platform." Linux clustering is a method of linking multiple computers, or compute nodes, together to form a powerful, unified system. Linux NetworX clusters can match the performance of supercomputers for a fraction of the cost. Industries adopting Linux clusters include high-end research, scientific and government markets including seismic exploration (oil and gas), fluid dynamics and pharmaceutical research (molecular and chemical modeling), and other applications with requirements for large amounts of data computation, data handling and/or storage, high levels of reliability, flexible scale of operations and high-speed communication. “We’re thrilled that a leading Linux clustering company like Linux NetworX recognizes the value in the PGI CDK compilers and tools,” said Vince Schuster, director of The Portland Group division of STMicroelectronics and former CEO of The Portland Group, Inc. “We’ve realized a significantly increased demand for our cluster development software arising from what we believe is the use of IA32 Linux clusters to standardize methods, minimize costs and maximize performance while staying on the cutting edge of processor development.” Linux NetworX Evolocity clusters are currently available with the PGI CDK.
