High Performance Computing and Networking Research Veteran Joins Darkstrand to Provide Unparalleled Network Implementation Expertise to the Commercial Sector: Today Darkstrand, a pioneer in corporate high-speed connectivity bridging research and commercialization, announces the appointment of William R. Wing, Ph.D. as Chief Technology Officer. With more than 20 years in the research community, and as one of the few individuals in the world who has successfully built a 10G fiber-optic network, Dr. Wing is uniquely positioned to apply that expertise in the commercial sector to drive innovation and enhance America’s competitive advantage.
The appointment of Dr. Wing will help Darkstrand usher in a new R&D and collaboration model for corporate America, in which bandwidth is no longer a constraint on innovation. Through Darkstrand and Dr. Wing’s guidance, corporations can now more effectively collaborate internally and with research institutions across the entire R&D cycle – from discovery through prototype development and commercialization. This new model enables massive production data to seamlessly travel between geographic locations on Darkstrand’s advanced 10G network.
“Darkstrand was created to liberate innovation in American corporations by leveraging the technology and minds of the research laboratories to connect ideas with high performance networking and computing capabilities,” said Michael Stein, CEO of Darkstrand. “Dr. Wing brings unmatched experience to our management team and amazing subject-matter expertise for our customers as Darkstrand’s new CTO.”
In his new position, Dr. Wing will work with Darkstrand to develop and maintain its network architecture to provide a direct-line from the knowledge-driven science world to results-oriented enterprises. This will ultimately enable U.S. companies to innovate and compete more effectively in today’s global market. Dr. Wing’s role additionally involves technical and collaborative solution planning with Darkstrand’s customers.
Prior to joining Darkstrand, Dr. Wing was a Senior Research Staff Member in the Network Research Group of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). While at ORNL, Dr. Wing was the principal network architect and project manager responsible for architecting, planning and directing the construction of the FutureNet DWDM network infrastructure. This connected ORNL and select research universities in the Tennessee Valley to Chicago and Atlanta at multiple 10G speeds. In addition, he served as ORNL’s representative on the National Lambda Rail (NLR) board after negotiating ORNL’s NLR membership.
“Darkstrand is uniquely positioned to shift the way corporate America thinks about innovation, inspiring companies to expand their creative thinking to reach toward the advances that only high-performance networking and supercomputing can support,” said Dr. Wing. “I see Darkstrand’s incredible potential, and I am looking forward to partnering with corporations to make this vision a reality. I am committed to helping our customers leverage the high-speed network and computer ecosystems that the scientific community has been using for years to improve their internal business processes, become more competitive, and ultimately help to solidify our economy.”
