JOB DESCRIPTION This position will join the Distributed & Grid Computing (DGC) group at TACC to perform research, development, and support activities involving distributed and grid computing techniques and technologies. These activities include research, development, and deployment of software technologies that integrate computing, visualization, and data resources to enhance the research capabilities of the UT academic research community, the NSF TeraGrid community, and other UT partner institutions. Particular emphasis for DGC activities at TACC will be on grid scheduling and workflow, grid portals, information services, and data grid technologies, ensuring maximum impact on TACC grid computing projects including the TeraGrid, UT Grid, and the Texas Internet Grid for Research & Education. This position will participate in TACC DGC activities in the following ways: • evaluate new distributed and grid computing architectures, systems, and software tools to determine future R&D activities and technologies to enhance TACC's computing environment • initiate and conduct research & development activities, including collaborations with external researchers to produce new distributed and grid computing technologies that enhance the TACC production computing environment and capabilities • obtain external funding to enhance TACC's distributed and grid computing activities, expertise, and resources by submitting proposals to funding agencies and technology vendors • lead and participate in development and deployment of production grids • work with UT researchers and partners to set up and use distributed and grid computing technologies in their R&D activities • publicize the results of TACC's distributed and grid computing activities through presentations at conferences and workshops, and through publications in conference proceedings and professional journals • and other related functions as assigned Selected candidate will be appointed to the title "Research Scientist" or "Research Associate" based on a review of research accomplishments and professional experience and qualifications. Required Qualifications: • doctoral degree in computer science, information science, mathematics, or a computational science or engineering discipline • six or more years of experience in scientific programming and/or software development • three or more years of post-graduate experience in using and developing distributed and grid computing software • research experience in Grid computing including three or more recent relevant publications • expertise using Grid computing software such as Globus or Condor-G • proficiency with common Grid computing and Web services programming languages, tools, and protocols including C, C++, Java, XML, SOAP, and WSDL • experience developing software for Unix systems • demonstrated expertise working in collaborative, interdisciplinary projects with computational scientists and engineers • personnel mentoring experience • experience working with academic researchers in science/engineering on collaborative projects • excellent technical writing and presentation skills. Preferred Qualifications: • three or more years of post-doctorate experience in an academic research environment • experience in writing proposals for external funding • experience working with researchers to integrate Grid technologies into their research activities. • familiarity with the Open Grid Services Architecture, the Global Grid Forum, the NSF TeraGrid, etc. • significant coursework or other formal education in an application science or engineering discipline • systems administration experience on Unix systems • network security expertise and experience.
