PLANO, Texas, -- EDS today announced the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has standardized on product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services from EDS PLM Solutions. JPL will implement both Unigraphics(R) NX and I-deas(R) -- the two premier computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering analysis (CAD/CAM/CAE) software products from EDS -- to create an integrated solution for its total product engineering requirements. JPL also uses EDS' Teamcenter(R) suite of integrated PLM solutions for knowledge management, data distribution, product visualization, enterprise collaboration and project management. The contract for software and services, terms of which were not disclosed, was finalized in the third quarter of 2002. JPL will use Unigraphics NX and I-deas to consolidate the number of CAD/CAM/CAE systems used at the Pasadena, California division. JPL had various systems in its product development environment and needed to standardize on a single solution provider that could meet its complex design and manufacturing requirements. The EDS solutions were selected based on large assembly performance, ease-of-use and interoperability. Additionally, many JPL suppliers use Unigraphics NX and I-deas, promising a significantly enhanced environment for collaboration. JPL, managed by the California Institute of Technology, is NASA's lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Primary products include space exploration satellites and telescopes for observing distant galaxies. "The JPL decision to standardize on both Unigraphics NX and I-deas is a testament to the interoperability of these two solutions and serves as further validation of our long-term strategy to migrate the two products into a single best-in-class offering," said Tony Affuso, president, EDS PLM Solutions. "Furthermore, the ability of Teamcenter to manage data from both Unigraphics NX and I-deas is a reflection of its CAD-neutral capability and EDS' Open by Design philosophy. We are proud to help clients like the prestigious NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory create value through PLM."
