New Appliances Provide Dedicated, Carrier-Class Hardware to Optimize the Performance of Juniper's Media Flow Solution
Juniper Networks has announced the availability of Juniper Networks VXA Series Media Flow Engines, a line of high-performance content delivery appliances designed to maximize the scale and reliability of Juniper's Media Flow Solution. The Media Flow Solution is a converged content delivery and caching solution that enables service providers, content publishers and content delivery networks (CDN) to deliver rich media content more efficiently, cost effectively and profitably. Customers such as Demand Media, Break Media and BitGravity have already been using the Media Flow Solution to improve the efficiency of their content delivery and reduce costs.
"The market has experienced exponential growth in online video traffic over the past few years, often doubling every six months according to leading analysts," said Manoj Leelanivas, executive vice president and general manager of Junos Ready Software at Juniper Networks. "Our customers are looking for ways to improve their scale, drive down costs and grow revenue at the same time, and the Media Flow Solution allows them to achieve all three. It improves the efficiency of content delivery, while opening up the potential for new revenue-generating services."
As users' entertainment viewing habits shift to the Internet, the demand for rich media content is increasing, driving dramatic traffic growth and causing a strain on networks and data centers. Network operators, CDNs and content providers alike are seeking more efficient and scalable ways to deliver the content and innovate with new services around content consumption and delivery.
Juniper's Media Flow Solution enables customers to:
- Reduce costs: The Media Flow Solution can cache and deliver content closer to the edge of service providers' networks, which can reduce transit traffic and lower CapEx and OpEx. Content publishers can deploy Media Flow as a next-generation origin cache, where its high scalability enables server consolidation, reducing costs associated with power, space and cooling.
- Improve user experience: Using advanced adaptive streaming technology, Media Flow significantly improves the user experience enabling a TV-like viewing experience even as network conditions fluctuate. Users also enjoy improved response times since content is served more locally.
- Drive new revenue: The Media Flow Solution allows service providers to introduce many compelling new content-based services and expand business models while leveraging existing network investments. With the Media Flow Solution, customers can also efficiently deliver CDN services or the delivery of premium entertainment content to any device, at any time.
Originally developed in collaboration with Ankeena Networks, which Juniper acquired in April 2010, the Media Flow Solution is part of the Junos Ready Software family.
"Content delivery is the service provider's primary revenue opportunity, and a CDN has to address that opportunity and mesh with the operations, network and cloud computing commitments that form the modern service layer," said Tom Nolle, founder and president of CIMI Corporation. "Media Flow's cloud-powered content delivery architecture is the only solution to abstract and virtualize content and resources at the same time, and to map them flexibly together. Juniper's Media Flow Solution makes the network into a content partner and gives service providers a new avenue for revenue generation while continuing to provide superior content delivery."
The foundation of the Media Flow Solution is Juniper Networks Media Flow Controller, a hierarchical caching software appliance that provides an awareness of content requirements, network conditions and storage infrastructure for optimal caching efficiency and performance. The Media Flow Solution also includes Juniper Networks Media Flow Manager, an element management application and the newly available VXA Series Media Flow Engines.
Media Flow Controller can be deployed on the VXA Series Media Flow Engines or on general purpose x86 servers. In either case, Media Flow Controller extracts high performance from the available hardware, enabling more enhanced scalability. This scalability enables customers to reduce the number of servers in their networks, thus reducing costs associated with power, space and cooling.
