Japan's Largest and Most Advanced Academic Research Network Based on Juniper Networks T-series: Juniper Networks, Inc. today announced that Japan’s National Institute of Informatics (NII) has upgraded its nationwide SINET3 backbone with Juniper Networks T-series Core Routers. The expanded SINET3 next generation network (NGN) consolidates the NII’s existing SINET and SuperSINET infrastructures into the country’s largest and most advanced research and education network. Juniper Networks T-series will provide a high-performance network core, enabling SINET3 to reliably and efficiently support the high bandwidth applications of its constituents, while providing a non-disruptive upgrade path for future scalability. The NII is Japan’s primary academic research institution, chartered with advancing research and development in information-related fields, including networking, software and content. Its packet-based SINET network was created to connect R&E institutions throughout the country, and also link Japan’s R&E community with the rest of the world. SINET3 now connects over 700 universities and research institutions throughout Japan, facilitating research in high energy physics and nuclear fusion, astronomical sciences, genome information analysis, supercomputer and nanotechnology. The NII uses Juniper Networks routers to deliver NGN IP services, including layer 2 and 3 VPNs, IPv6, GMPLS, multicasting, and multihoming services. SINET3 also provides a 10 Gigabit Ethernet user interface and delivers 40 Gbps speeds in the backbone, a 4x advance on SuperSINET which provided 2.4 Gigabit Ethernet user interface and delivered 10 Gbps in the backbone. The Juniper Networks T-series is the industry's most proven core routing platform, with over 2,500 units deployed in customer networks worldwide. Leveraging the modular JUNOS operating system, the T-series provides unmatched system scale, reliability and performance, making it the ideal core platform for large scale deployments in the world's most demanding networks. “SINET3 is leveraging our T-series and JUNOS to deliver a high-performance network core that delivers industry-leading reliability and scalability,” said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan for Juniper Networks. “We are pleased to be part of this network that plays such a critical role in Japan’s academic and research community.”
