HERNDON, VA -- NEC Corporation (Nasdaq: NIPNY) announced today that it has been selected to supply its SpectralWave(TM) Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system by Telefonos De Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (TELMEX), the largest telecommunication operator in Mexico. The company completed the shipment, which included an SDH fiber optic system, through NEC de Mexico. The TELMEX project is the first DWDM deployment for NEC in Latin America. NEC has been a major SDH fiber optical network vendor in Mexico. NEC's terrestrial DWDM system has been deployed in the United States, Japan, Asia and Europe, and the company is one of the world's leading DWDM submarine systems vendors -- supplying DWDM systems to large submarine cable projects such as APCN2, AJC and EAC2. NEC's SDH fiber optic system and the DWDM system, with a capacity of 2.5Gbps x 80 Wave/200Gbps, will be implemented in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico's third-largest city (pop. 3.5 million), supporting the city's mobile and Internet communication. Due to the rapid expansion of worldwide broadband communications, and the corresponding increase in voice, video and data traffic, the telecommunications infrastructure in Mexico's densely populated areas is rapidly expanding to meet the demand. NEC's DWDM system is a key technology for mobile and Internet traffic as a next-generation broadband network solution and is being deployed in order to broaden the traffic capacity of the country's trunk network system. This project is an important step for NEC's DWDM business in Latin America. A combination of NEC's worldwide deployment of DWDM systems and NEC Mexico's total solution capabilities -- from system design, implementation to customer services -- were favorably evaluated for the order from TELMEX. NEC will continuously promote its DWDM system in Mexico and other Latin American countries such as Brazil, Argentine, Chile and Costa Rica and plans to further expand its networking solutions to operators in all over the world.
