Juniper Networks and OnLive announced that OnLive, the pioneer of on-demand, instant-play video games, has upgraded its data center infrastructure with a simplified Juniper Networks architecture of routing, switching and security solutions. Powered by Juniper Networks single operating system, Junos, OnLive's data centers can support massive amounts of bandwidth for voice, video and data from the cloud to customers using a simplified, integrated design that requires fewer devices and interconnections.
OnLive supports cloud-based, on-demand video gaming via the Internet directly to customers' TVs, PCs, Macs or tablets in a seamless, scalable and reliable way, powered by Juniper Networks. With its cloud-based video compression technology, OnLive has revolutionized the gaming experience for home and mobile users. By partnering with Juniper Networks, OnLive was able to meet the challenges associated with delivering a state-of-the-art gaming system in an unprecedented way.
"The number-one factor that drove us to Juniper Networks is the value proposition -- the bang for the buck we get from our core routers, switches and firewalls," said Darrell Gentry, director of systems planning, OnLive. "Juniper Networks data center network architecture has enabled us to deliver a high-end gaming experience from the cloud simply and securely. Having a massively scalable network from Juniper Networks is the foundation of our continued innovation and success."
OnLive was able to reduce the number of layers in its data center infrastructure using Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches with Virtual Chassis fabric technology, which enables multiple interconnected switches to operate as a single, logical device, allowing network consolidation and fewer devices to manage. Juniper Networks MX960 3D Universal Edge Routers provide OnLive a high-performance routing platform with high port density, while the Juniper Networks SRX3400 Series Services Gateway provides robust networking and security services. The underlying Junos operating system further reduces network complexity through the integration of routing, switching, security and network services on a single platform. OnLive has plans to further simplify its data centers with the Juniper Networks QFabric solution, which will enable exponential improvements in data center speed, scale and efficiency.
"To maximize the experience that comes with our advanced gaming system, the connection must be of the highest quality," continued Gentry. "Choosing Juniper Networks allowed us to overhaul our data center architecture and provide the high-performance, highly scalable and ultra-reliable network infrastructure required to support our cloud computing needs."
"Utilizing a cloud-based delivery model presents a huge opportunity for consumers to access OnLive's innovative gaming portfolio, but meeting the performance demands placed on the network can create an economic challenge," said Mike Marcellin, vice president of systems strategy and marketing for the Platform Systems Division at Juniper Networks. "By deploying our new data center network infrastructure, OnLive is able to provide customers with the user experience they expect while taking advantage of operational simplicity, lower latency and lower cost."
